Re: Best door seals for mk1
Forum silence suggests that Colin,s asking us about mk1 door seals is a very tricky subject .. me having tried "todays new" Door Seals from the four main suppliers .. all i achieved was a big box of new Door Seals that are not fit for purpose
..and i still haven got the best solution as yet.
Tried the Blue Tack & bending body shuts tricks, also giving seals a Hair Cut & still not convinced anything available today matches the original BMC door seals.. always willing to be proved wrong.

I think it will be a case of trial and error if the car is built and painted.
Every door shut is different now as most cars have been 'got at' in one way or another.
Minispares, Pheonix or genuine seem to be the better options
Good luck

Yep, agree totally with Roly and Norman, above. The BEST option so far as I can see and after recently helping my pal Clever Trevor fit his doors to his painted shell is to fit the new (minispares/Pheonix..., take your pick) and doors BEFORE you paint the door shuts. That way you can slightly bend - or tweak the rib to suit the door and rubber.
The manufacturers and retailers can't make a rubber that'll suit all rebuilds and restorations
Said it a hundred times and it keeps cropping up.......

Thanks all. The shell was repaired by one company, and painted by another. Now we have been commissioned to reassemble it.
So the fun starts here !
We'll have to get the client to talk to the shell repairer about how he gapped the doors.
But I hadn't considered Phoenix as a supplier, so thanks for that.

Fitted some Minispares seals to an unrestored customer car earlier in the week. No issues with fitment, door opens and closes without binding and seals well.
Saying that if I'm restoring a car then doors are gapped and setup with new seals that stay with the car through panel and paint through to final assembly to ensure consistent fit.

If only the seals had come to us with the shell.
All the door furniture and locks have gone missing too.

That's bad, as I was just about to make my usual statement, namely to restore the old seals by puting them into the washing machine with a hefty dose of conditioner.woodypup59 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2025 9:57 am If only the seals had come to us with the shell.

Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s

Phoenix can offer 4 different versions of door seals. Phone them and ask for a sample set for you to checkout. Very helpful people.

Phoenix offer different sizes don't forget, so the blue tack trick can help you choose.

Thanks Old Dave, and everyone else - food for thought. We'll see what the customer wants to do.
