Window Washer Bottle mounted on inner wing

Post by 100BUR »

I'm wondering.. would it be possible to mount the windscreen washer bottle with a pump on the inside of the drivers wing?
I know that a lot of modern cars have them mounted in that position, for any one who watches Retro Power on YouTube they utilise the inside of the inner wing as well.

I would say that it'd be a simple job depending what mark/type of body you're using. The trouble is that wherever it is fitted, it's be constantly bombarded with shit and other road muck. As for the pump..... You don't need a big pump and that'd get blasted with crap too. Best put that inside the engine bay. And what about topping/filing the bottle up while it's under there.......?

You can get the washer bottles with extended filler pipe and cap, there's a company that Retro Power use
(just need to do a bit of research and find them, think they are a Spanish company)
VW caddy and a Land rover defender use something similar. Aluminium bottles are available.

Ideally I would prefer the engine bay,but with the conversion to 7 port and fuel injection, fuel relay on the bulkhead and fuel supply and return pipes I don't have a lot of room available.

The later Rover Injection Minis have a plastic expansion tank for the cooling system in the nearside wheel arch on the inner wing. It is positioned up on the shock absorber/damper mounting bracket, so something similar could work with an extended filler in the engine bay as seen on many modern cars. A small washer pump could also be remotely mounted inline inside the engine bay...like we used to do when upgrading our early Minis to aftermarket electric washers.

If space in the engine bay is a problem, don't complicate things. Just do what Rover did when they came across the very same problem with my RC Sport. Fit the washer bottle in the boot. The specially shaped bottle, bracket and pump readily available new or used, ready to go, out of harms way

Where there's a will, there's always an easy way

Peter, out of interest do you know what route the plastic pipe/tubing take from exiting the boot to feeding the front windscreen washer jets?

Edit: Just found this quote below on TMF, posted by someone who worked on the Mini production line:-

"It goes up the rear C post along the roof and down the front A post and out through the bulkhead through a grommet
Easy job if the headlining is removed, on the Mini line we used to put a small bolt in the end of the washer tube this gave it a bit of weight and helped it along through the body."

Ah, yes..... That's a point that I'd never considered. How to get the tube from the rear to the front.

If it was me, I'd use a length of the wiggly springy curtain wire that they hand net curtains from. That usually finds it was along, up and down....

There was a car at Beaulieu last year that had some lovely little mods on it, including a remote washer bottle. I only got the one photo of it, but I recall that the the 'filler pipe' came from somewhere like Car Builder Solutions and the tank was mounted round by the radiator so it benefitted from some heat (not that I think this car tends to come out on freezing cold icy days..)

Hang on minutes lads,I think I've got a great idea

Thanks for all the replies and pictures

Realistically I think the boot is a Non Runner..
I've had a new roof lining fitted by Optomise Auto and need to Park that one 😅

There's most probably more Mileage in the remote filler.

I need to get myself into Gear and get sorted :D

Couldn't the pipe just run free under the carpet, rear to front. It'd be as unobtrusive as it gets!

Thanks Guys,

I just need my car back, so I can look at the windscreen washer bottle and a few other finish off job.
Hopefully it's only going to be a couple of weeks before it's sat in my garage again
