Yes the original seller at the auction was very transparent which was very refreshing, some might say to his own cost.

Back in 1989 along with many others in the 1980's, the late Graham Robinson then vice-chairman of the 'Mini Cooper Register' decided to reshell his Mk2 Mini Cooper S using a standard Mk2 Mini Automatic he bought for £80 from a scrapyard as it had a good body but a broken auto transmission and was cheaper than restoring his original S shell. As detailed below in an extract from 'Classic and Sportscar' magazine in November 1992...

I found the shell for Graham it was very good for its age, it had gutter damage where it was picked up by the crane and was a sandy beige colour. The original shell was unbelievably rusty even the 4 rolled seams were splitting open with the rust. Would the shell have been saved today...

This sold for £15,500 plus buyers commission which seemed pretty steep in todays market for an Cooperised early 850 with an 850 chassis number. Mathewson’s really should have declared that in the description really no matter what the V5 says.

South African Mini - oil filter mounted directly onto cylinder block, etc.

Why would anyone go to the trouble of importing a Mini in that condition to the UK, unless it was driven here in a Banger Rally and then abandoned?

You will be putting 20 grand (or more) into it, but you'll have a real one as opposed to the kind of rubbish sold in UK auctions lately.
