SU electric pump venting Mk2 Cooper S
Hi,
I know this topic has been covered in various ways in the past but can't find the answer to this question though. It's regards the venting pipe from the electric fuel pump. I bought a new SU pump to replace my original pump, which wasn't in a great state. Also, the new pumps are claimed to be resistant to ethenol. It does look and seems to perform exactly as the original, having two vent connectors on it.
I remember that when I first got the car back in the mid 1980s, there was a single thin pipe running from one of these vent connectors to a little nylon connecting thing that was attached to the heel board. Part number 13H1640 I believe. These are no longer available but luckily my one is still in place, albeit it has been paint sprayed when the shell was restored recently. I will have to carfully run a small drill through it and am aware of the fuel pipe in the imediate proximity on the other side. The thin pipe has long ago disintigrated and gone but suitable thin flexible plastic pipe is easily available.
I can't remember which of the two vent connectors on the pump it connected to. The pipe was discarded more than 30 years ago. Should there be a T piece joining both vents or do I just ignore one of them? I don't remember there ever being a T piece.
Any thoughts?

The venting should be on the upper body...that is where the diaphragm is....
The vent on the bottom.....that is where the points are.....I would be concerned about leaving that one open....you wouldn't want the damp British air getting in there.
There is no reason to have a vent there,,,,well none that I can think of! I would put a sleeve over it...like the one on the threaded stud.

I agree with Dermott. The diaphragm vent is to allow for the internal air pressure within the pump body to remain at neutral whatever position the diaphragm is in......., so when the pump is running the diaphragm vent is always venting, in and out.
As for the points end, it really doesn't need a vent unless you want to "Tee' it to the diaphragm vent pipe.

In period all the fuel pumps I had used this type of end cover, including the works twin AUD 408 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166829061852 ... BMgLKdqPJk the cover over the breather contained a ball bearing (non return v/v), as Dermott above
said just blank it off most of the pumps appear now to have no breather on the points cover.

Thanks guys, this is all very useful stuff. I will order one of those valves to fit to the electrical end of the pump and run a piece of new plastic tube to the existing nylon connector in the heel board.

Ah, yes. I just noticed that. I believe someone down under is 3D printing them. I can’t imagine there’s a big demand for them but great that some people are reproducing these impossible to find things.

That particular part was a hot topic in the Australian online Mini community. Some of the originality aficionados almost came to blows (OK, I could be exaggerating) over the presence/absence/originality of that little vent rivet thing. So not only are they reproduced here, but it appears that there are two different suppliers of them.

Prior to the reproduction item becoming available, used ones were selling on ebay for north of $500.00.

Thanks for posting this Spider, my Feb 64's hole wasn't quite circular and was clearly drilled out at a later date, so this bulletin clarifies that mine was done as a retro fit.

Actually there's another supplier who has had "thousands" of them made in China in plastic (not 3D printed) using a NOS original as the sample. I spoke last night with Matt Read who runs Readspeed Mini Mecca in Brisbane and he confirmed he has supplied Karcraft and other Mini parts outlets in Oz with them. He sells them for AUD $15 each. Be aware the manufacturers made them almost exactly the same colour as the sample which had faded and yellowed a bit over time, so they look "aged" rather than bright white as they would have been when new fifty years ago.
He's happy to provide a bulk quantity to anyone in the UK (or elsewhere) for on-selling if there's deemed to be a market.

In defence of Spiderman Chris, I'd say that after living and working in Australia for several years, he is the classic, tell/say-it-as-it-is Aussie. who walks the walk and even better, can equally talk the talk. Regardless of your previous opinion, he's a good firm and solid friend of this forum.
Maybe other forumers who have followed some of Chris's articles and advice might like to come on board with a bit of support

850man - I wasn't ever banned from any forum. I'd had enough of the infighting, personalities and BS, all nothing in the world to do with Minis.
