apart from testing one, is there a way to tell if the sender is regulated or non-regulated by looking at one?

I believe the colour of the plastic around the terminal tells you which type it is.

IIRC green is pre63 unregulated (ie 12 volt), black is post 63 10 volt regulated.

I think the change date is Septemberish '64 - when hydro came in. My mid September '64 850 has the later type and is one of the earliest hydro cars.
