Exhaust fitting (fully standard)

I was wondering if anyone would please be able to help with fitting an exhaust on a '66 , 850.

Please see attached photo, I cannot get the exhaust tail pipe to sit in the crescent cut out regardless of when I seem to do! It is a Minispares new exhaust.

Has anyone else had this issue ?

It just seems to me that the actual pipe parts haven't been bent at the correct angles. I don't know if it's made like a Cooper or an S but there are two bends on yours that are wrong. The one in front of the box should allow the box to swing more to the left and the exit pipe should be bent to allow the bracket to attach to the subframe mounting point.

There's nothing that you can do except sent ot back with a few photos so that they can actually see what's wrong

There's quite a scope for rotating the downpipe on the manifold as it's almost a spherical joint. Are you clamping it up at the manifold before checking the run of the pipe ?. I would doubt very much that MS or their supplier would get the shape wrong on a standard exhaust. Leave it slack on the manifold then align it with the rear panel, loosely fit the intermediate and rear straps before tightening the clamp. Also put a jack and piece of wood below the downpipe and jack it hard up onto the manifold once you have everything aligned (use plenty exhaust paste too).

I think you are using the wrong rearmost bracket. The OE bracket is used with one of them wire type hose clamps, IIRC.

I don't know if this very much affects the position, though.

Once again, Minikin raises an interesting point. The bracket 28, as shown was always prone to crack along the bottom compound bend points shown just above the figure 27. You could say that it was made to fail with two sharp bends and a curvature thrown in for good measure. When it does break, usually on a long journey miles from home, you'll soon hear it! It'll be banging away and swinging to and fro like a bulldogs balls......

The last time I changed my exhaust bracket '28' I wrapped a piece of wire coat-hanger through the hole part, loosely around the exhaust and back again so that when it did decide to break again, on the way back from Beaulieu this year, the exhaust was still tethered to the bracket and not getting any worse.

(Ps, Fixed it for good by getting the new replacement and anealing it to remove any of the previous stress/fatigue points!)

As others have said leave the front clamp loose, loosen the mid point bracket, and rotate the rear assembly, in the picture the rear pipe is too low, by rotating the system everything will tuck up nicely. The picture above is a big bore bracket, you have the correct one

It's an 850, not a Cooper so the single mount hanger being used is the correct one.

I suspect that the rear rubber cotton reel mount is in the wrong hole. It needs to be in the upper of the two holes on the rear cross bar of the subframe. This will shift the tail pipe to the left and also raise it up from it's current position.

I always carried a wire shirt hanger, worked wanders on allsort of pro lems!

one of the best spares is always a length of fencing wire or a couple of wire coat hangers in the boot fixes a lot problems

I am still struggling, just wondering if anyone would be so kind as to post a few photos of an original set up.
Could hopefully then try and obtain what angle the clamp comes away from the cotton reel and see which piece needs a slight tweak!

Looking at both of these line drawings, your photos and the comments so far, I'd suggest that the right hand bend as identified by the arrow and figure 1 in Timmys drawing (above) is wrong. It seems obvious to me. The bend should allow the exhaust to end, aligned with the rear exhaust hanger.

It is right or it's wrong and you really need to take the bull by the horns and return it!

Anyone in Buckinghamshire got a small diameter pipe bender?

there are surely differences between uk minis and the ones made in australia there are suttle differences in the 1800 so why not the mini as they went over to australian content

The bends all worked fine on my mini and it was centered in the opening on the rear panel

Parts manuals aren't engineering drawings so the exact angles may not be accurate

This exhaust system in photo below is from the '59 Mini currently on Ebay, which had some comments about the exhaust mounting on the subframe being cranked over at an odd angle....perhaps they had the same problems aligning it?

(For reference: Early Mini exhausts (1959-1964) had an extra bend in them to gain clearance in the tunnel around the floor starter and its cables but are quite hard to source now. Some photos of the bend in link below. A hot exhaust touching the floor starter or its cables would not have a good outcome...)
