Re: Gearbox weight
Thanks folks.
D- appreciate the link & tried them but they were £130. Top tip - Parcelforce did it for £16 as it was under 30kg
Miniweights - I knew that existed but forgot about it
Woodypup- that sounded a lot so I stuck myself and the gearbox on the scales and as a complete gearbox it weighed 27kg
Problem solved now.
Cheers. Mark

Re: Gearbox weight
£130 seems extremely excessive
I’d have thought a gearbox was on the parcel force not excepted items list?
The other one that’s always worth a try is parcels2go but at £16 you can’t go wrong..

Re: Gearbox weight
D- I might not have given full disclosure on exactly what sort of box was in the box
Its oil free and wrapped in poly and padding so should be fairly inoffensive
Yeh £130 seemed fairly mental.

Re: Gearbox weight
I shipped a crank to Australia once, about £20, using the ebay shipping service (what ever its called)
It was surprisingly efficient and cheap compared to other services I tried.
Dare I say, you could put on ebay at pre determined time, buyer purchases it and then ship via ebay, ebay fees might get in the way, but for certain items might work.

Re: Gearbox weight
Thanks. Worth a look next time. Hardly use ebay for anything nowadays. Fees have risen substantially too.
5 years ago I could never imagine a time when I wouldn't be scouring for parts or listing stuff.

Re: Gearbox weight
Yes sold something recently and got charged £44 by EBay on a sale of £325
Joking aside was quite a shock
Re: Gearbox weight
EBay has scrapped it’s selling fees today.. not sure if they charge for handling the money still but it might make it a better place
Try proovia, don’t know if they’ll be the cheapest but they are definitely the best for taking care of items
Re: Gearbox weight
I’m 90% sure eBay motors is just cars not parts but I can’t find anything to confirm this

Re: Gearbox weight
As an eBay addict for many years, I have noticed a considerable drop in the amount of “private” items for sale in several classifications, the main one being “Classic Mini” and for the past couple of years I’ve only been listing items for sale when there was an 80% discount on selling fees. I received the email from eBay today stating all private listings are free from charges. I have read everything carefully and as far as I can see this is a permanent change, it doesn’t include complete vehicles, each private seller is allowed up to 330 free listings per month after that there are fees (let’s face it more than that you’re probably going to be classed as a trader anyway). I can only assume that eBay have taken notice of this downturn and decided to do something about it before they totally lose out to Facebook Marketplace, Vinted etc.

Re: Gearbox weight
I think listings have also reduced due to EBay automatically reporting data to the HMRC for any seller that sells over 30 items or exceeds £1770 per year. I think from memory this new rule came into effect 1st January 2024.

Re: Gearbox weight
That's good (for us)
Ebay was great 5-10 years ago but as you say the throughput of 'Classic Mini' items has dropped considerably and there are only so many original BMC '5/16 brake backplate adjusting spanners' and 'Radford BMC Cooper Works driveshaft output shaft covers' I can stomach
I might give it a whirl again. Thanks for sharing
