The auctioneers probably glossed over the missing guts of the engine and box. With some of the uusual flowery words used by auctioneers and solicitors. You know the sort of thing....... The engine and box are present but we are unable to start and run the engine due to a small electrical problem. So bring a trailer........ Until you get it home that is!

Had to do a double take at the number of Mini for sale at Mathewsons this month, think he is trying to corner the market! Looks like 22 at the moment!

Most of which didn’t sell, especially the early cars. All the very cheap ones did. The red Mk2 Cooper looked good and a right bargain!

Its a shame, but “ Vanilla” normally sells for highest price……
I dont know the current owner, but it very much looks as if hes used the car as they were supposed to be used…
Preety sure as well that it is still an original S shell and not re- shelled…..which is novel

Historic Auctions reported similarly poor sales last weekend with very few cars meeting reserve. Until sellers readjust their expectations this will just continue and cause a domino effect. I’ve had a few say to me since selling Minty I should have hung on to it for a couple of years but I’m fairly convinced the way everything is going it’s only going to get worse not better and there’s really very little chance of the market recovering, certainly not for 60s cars. Matters little to anyone who’s got a car they’re never gonna part with (and even then the losses are just part of enjoying something you love!) but it’s a great time for some buyers looking for that car they could never afford.

You bailed at exactly the right time imo. They've had their day.
Cooper stuff is at the stage now where to have had one new, you'd need to be in your eighties or knocking on that way. Ditto Mark 2 Jaguars - 15 grand will buy something very nice now, and not some shitty beige 240 auto either.

In regards the shifting tastes and pockets of buyers, I’ve a Mk2 Escort Mexico which I’m mulling on selling…70’s fast fords are already dropping quickly and I’d be amazed to see £30k from it.

I had one in 1987. It was okay but nothing an Alfasud Ti or Golf GTi couldn't sort out. In fact it was very little faster than a 1600 Sport. I rebuilt it bodily (wings, sills, arches - the usual crap) colour changed it from green to Diamond white and bought a 2.0 exchange engine from Ford. The price of RS1800's is insane. £100,000 plus for a Mark 2 Escort?
They will come crashing down before long.

While our club has plenty of younger members who show real interest in owning the cars few have the depth of pocket to pay more than £3K-£5K. If you don't have the connection with the past history of earlier cars then paying 3 times the price for something that is very similar is unlikely.
For me ULEZ style restrictions are the big threat to anything in the late 80s-early 2000's as more cash strapped councils decide to use this cash cow method. My son was looking at a Honda S2000 (future classic?) and some have £715 road tax, which to me is a real turn off. Hence I think unrealistic auction lots from this era will struggle.
I'll stick with my 40+ historic class Innocenti and Alfa and hope that they don't come after us for too much in the future.

I’d class myself in the younger category. currently 30 my first car was a 1981 HL and now I have a 1960 project, A lot of my friends are into 90’s stuff because that’s what we grew up with and saw our parents driving. Which is driving the prices of that type of stuff up, unfortunately most people that remember minis especially earlier ones growing up probably already have or have had on.

I’m 60 and was at the younger end of the membership of the MCR when I first joined in the late 80s, I suspect I still am and this is mirrored by the average age of car owners I see at local classic car shows, some of which are much quieter than they ever used to be. The prices of ‘modern classics’ seem to be holding up though! We’re essentially the steam engine owners of the future!

I dont know i think there is still a generation's worth of time to hold price's at sensible money for The Mini and Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts etc etc.
I am 57 and would like to think i will still have an appetite for cars for another 20 years assuming i last that long.
It is good to see all the silly prices deminishing though

Hey Nick, I am up there at the plus 20 and still have an appetite for Minis. I'm sure that you will too. It's catching! I caught the itch in the mid 60's when my brother bought his first one, a tweed grey Cooper S
