hi all
did all aussie minis have mechanical petrol pumps also my mini clubman has no id plate as the front was cut off when i got it but the guy said the body no was on the rad shroud what goes now

Most had mechanical pumps. only exceptions were the Cooper S, GT and 850

The ID plate situation depends on the year but for most (or all?) it is not needed. On most Leyland minis, it was simply a compliance plate not an ID plate so not required.

For the Australian Clubman and Leyland model vehicles the car type and car number were stamped in to the top of the radiator shroud. That's what was used for vehicle registration purposes.

Since the shroud is missing the only other possible way to identify the car model and production period is the body number and prefix that was used in the early stages of vehicle assembly before the final car number was allocated and stamped. The prefix and number was stamped into the drain channel above the wiper motor or on the firewall behind the master cylinders, but may not be readily visible.

The format of the body type prefix is M2 / nn (two numerics). This will identify the model. The body number will be a number that is about 500 less than the final car number that was stamped in the shroud (car numbers started at 501).

If you can find the body number and prefix I can tell you the Mini model and approx. build date.

hi the number that i have was on the inner guard above the radiator which is now weldel to the guard as it has a removable front to allow work on the rover v8 i will see if i can read it it is not very legible

there are 2 numbers 1 in small stamping is 287 the other is in larger stamping it looks like 1732 or 1752 that is all i can find

Roger, sadly the legal ID of these cars was on the Radiator Cowling. The Plate, while nice to have, is not it's legal ID, though you may need to prove what year model it is so the car can be (theoretically) checked for compliance with the ADRs of that year.

With the cowling gone, it's not the end of the world, but does mean there's more flaming hoops to jump through to prove the car is not stolen or money owing in it, then have a police issued body ID issued for it and they'll likely say where they want that stamped.
