Early spin on oil filter head

I am wondering if it make sense to fit a later spin on type filter to the car and noticed that the earlier genuine versions seem to look more like the normal type with the longer studs. Does anyone have one by any chance? The type on the left on the Somerford page.

I managed to get one of the older 'long bolt' spin-on filter heads WITHOUT the warning light feed connection, from a boot trader at Beaulieu a couple of years ago. That plus a gasket and couple of Coopers/Unipart screw-on filters it all came to a few quid.

Got to say Andy, this modification (with mid br green painted filter) and the remote clutch bleeder were the two simplest but best mods I've ever encountered after many frustrating spills etc etc

First hunt has drawn a blank, found plenty of the later type only.

I have one too, yet it's just a regular early one but with an adaptor so the later type oil filters just screw on. Might be worth checking to see if you can find one of those

Just beware if you buy one without a comparison. There is an almost identical version, probably from a clubman, Metro or an 1100, that is slightly LONGER, from the rear to the front face. I initially had one of these to use but it fouled the front subframe cross member as I recall. Not a real prob as I advertised it here!

Mini spares have had a batch of the TAM2097 filter heads that are faulty . The tapered thread has been machined straight through so your pipe union will not tighten up . I’ve got a couple to go back . … Shirley

Thanks for the warnings. I do have a TAM type here and a few old ones that I am nor wondering if they could be converted, but hopefully one will turn up ;-) Thanks for the reminder regarding the metro type, I'm pretty sure I have one on an old MG Turbo engine and I might haver been tempted!!

Mine has Purolator on it, just like the paper filter type.

These spin on type Purolator heads where never fitted to the mini.
They were fitted to the 1275 mg midget's for a short period of time I have a spare one on shelf the if you need.

Interesting. I like them as they have the wider gasket, same as the paper element type, as opposed to the thin spin on filter type. Happy to purchase the spare you have, if its for sale.

Another thank you to this forum and to Daryl - looks like I have what I need.

FYI I also found a metro turbo one with a cooler amongst my parts, and as Peter said, it is indeed longer, so watch out for that everyone ;-)

I think the one I have (wherever it is) could be a Metro one as I remember it fouling, but put that down to using a late subframe where the engine is slightly further forward.

My MK1 Metro Turbo had an air oil cooler (same as a Cooper S). I believe the MG Metros had the water cooled oil cooler as a sandwich plate on the filter housing.

Yes indeed it does, mine still has that on it too. I still have the Metro tucked away in a mates garage as well!! Minus engine as he broke a flywheel puller on that and it never went back in!!
