Gaskets

Post by Jasonking »

Can somebody tell me in which order the gaskets, spacer and abutment plate fit please, from the manifold up to the carb?

Mine is this. Inlet man, gasket, heat shield, gasket, spacer, gasket carb body.

There was a bit of a discussion about it a year or so ago and someone suggested that the spacer should come before the heat shield. But as long as the extended heat shield doesn't touch the exhaust, does its job and the cross-bar holds the carb springs correctly in line with the carb levers, I don't think that it matters too much either way

Ta Peter, by heat shield you mean the abutment plate that holds the cables?

By heat shields, I mean the two large cranked steel sheets as shown in the parts list, 12A 219 and 247

Jason - what carb(s)?
Presumably as you’re talking about abutment plates they’re HIF types? In which case you may need the spacer between the inlet manifold and the play to stop the mechanism fouling on the exh manifold

Mine was:
Manifold
Spacer
Abutment plate
Carb

With gaskets in between all the layers (do yourself a favour and order at least 10 and keep them somewhere safe)

There....... a good example of the need to give a full explanation of the problem Jason. Being a mini cooper orientated forum, we're expecting, wrongly, standard twin SU's of some sort

I’d be happy enough to get one SU working properly at this point! Which way up does the manifold gasket fit on the head?

We don't. I don't think the forum is orientated primarily to them at all, far from it.
But Peter's comment about giving all the info does help people give answers to your questions that are more likely to be applicable.

The original style is more or less symmetrical, so I don'tthink it matters. If it has a metal side, that goes towards the manifold.
