Remote Shift Lever Retainer

Post by rogerotto66s »

Looking for the proper orientation of the remote gearbox shift lever retainer (#53 in picture below).

Numerous sites/manuals show the retainer facing down but I have seen numerous pictures with the retainer facing up.
Which is the correct orientation?
I have a 1966 “S”.

I've only ever seen them facing up, as pictured above.

Further to this Roger, when assembling, always replace the brass anti-rattle plunger and spring for reasons I explained in an article about this gear extension a few years ago. Or better still, make a new slightly longer plunger (a simple job) that really damps the rod and lever

The shift lever boot fits better with it facing down.

Strange....... I am just assembling a refurbished and slightly modified remote housing for mine and the top cover won't fully sit down fully on the housing when it's upside down because some of the housing casting etc obstructs it. I could get a rasp and take off the housing down a bit to suit I suppose

On my Aussie 69 Cooper S, it faced up, with a smaller rubber boot fitted to it. One end of the boot on the outer diameter, and the other around the larger diameter of the stick. This was in addition to the normal boot fitted between the stick and the floor.
As per item 30 in the photo.
