James Bolam is from Sunderland and lived opposite the Bede School on Durham Road, although he appeared in the Likely Lads set in Newcastle !

It is common knowledge that he doesn't like the N.E at all and has cut all ties with his home town, he also fell out with his co star Rodney Bewes. Which is a real shame but hay ho !

Mars Bar.jpg
Came across this "Mars Bar Advert" in a copy of the Daily Mail from Wednesday June 7th 1944.
Look at the wording.. " ZONING now re-stricts Mars to the Southern Counties" ..

Thought that Food Ration Books would prevent most people from buying a Mars Bar in WW2.
I have so much respect for those that served & gave in both wars .. they gave for what we have today .

I wonder if that znning is anyhing to do with my then heart-throb Marianne Faithfull's fondness for them. She was a Southern gal, from Newbury as I recall.....

"Murray Walker is often the man credited with coining the slogan "A Mars a Day Helps You Work, Rest and Play", although he denied he created what became arguably Britain's most recognisable advertising slogan. Mr Walker was an account director in charge of the Mars business at the advertising agency where the slogan was coined in 1959."

Lifted of Wiki…..may of been Newbury as she seems to of spent early life in Reading, the reference to Brixton, is probably Brixham Road Reading, otherwise its one hell of a commute

“Her family lived in Ormskirk, Lancashire, while her father completed a doctorate at Liverpool University.[8] She spent some of her early life at the commune at Braziers Park, Oxfordshire, formed by John Norman Glaister, where her father, who was instrumental in its foundation, lived and participated. Her parents divorced when she was age 6,[8] after which she moved with her mother to Milman Road in Reading. Her primary school was in Brixton. Living in reduced circumstances, Faithfull's girlhood was marred by bouts of tuberculosis. She was a charitably subsidised (bursaried) pupil at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Convent School, Reading, where she was, for a time, a weekly boarder.[9] While at St Joseph's, she was a member of the Progress Theatre's student group”

Didn’t know they had a factory in Theale (junction 12 M4) , any idea when it closed ?

Could it have been anything to do with Prestcold?

If so, would they have made car bodies as well ?
