Hens teeth - Tech Del Magnesium Sump Guard

Post by AndyPen »

Our car had a Tech Del Sumpguard to replace the ST Scottish lump of one, and it somehow got lost along the way / over the years.

You never know what may be out there when you ask folks on this forum, so just in case??? Is there one for sale out there somewhere ?

FYI it would go back on this car, so a genuine cause ;-)

I've seen a couple but not for sale - do you know of a source please Simon? At the moment I'll be re-fitting the original ST one for period correctness.

Hi Andy,
Don't mean to hijack your ad....but I am curious about that oil cooler on your car....do you still have it?
Attaching a picture of the usual type (on top) and the early version below...... as fitted to my 65 US S.
It does look like the one on your car.

Looks like the same Dermot. I've a few stashed away in my 'dumping' garage and keep meaning to check if the original rally one was in there. The car was running a 1275 from around 1969, as per this pic, and ran the upright type prior to that on the 1071. As my focus has been on the 1071, I've not been through the 1275 stuff - but should no doubt.

Another hijack - at least this keeps the topic on top ;)

Nice Bi-Iode headlights - do you still have them?
Yes I am a nerd: I am researching the Austrian Mini-racing scene of the 60s and 70s :ugeek:

Yes indeed, with a little help on here as only one survived a crash we had. By the time that pic had been taken the arches had been removed, but they are back on the car too.

The shorter/smaller oil cooler looks like the optional extra oil cooler available for the 998 Cooper. Or am I missing something in the scale Dermott/Andy? Are they not available?

The cooler was probably fitted in 1969 ish when the car was prepared for rallying, and almost certainly it is a period ST part like everything else on the car. I have had a quick look again but only found the larger version, but it occurs to me that it may have been damaged in our 82 crash.

Your lower one certainly looks correct Dermot. Somerford's offer looks close but has the upper fixing too.

Fred at nippy cars does an oilcooler without tabs at the top and very nice repro pipes. Hope this might help

I have a feeling in my bones that the BMC/BL oil cooles were made by MOCAL from Slough (?) Because they were fitted to MGB's and V8's here at Abingdon they seem to be fitted to every young lads car around these parts. Even my wife's teal blue and citrus Mini 1000's had them !

The bottom one in your picture looks like the regular horizontal mounted oil cooler. The top one is the larger ST one.

Toby,
The lower one is only 7 rows....unlike the top one....11 rows. The 11 row is the typical cooler used by many suppliers.....
The 7 row looks just like the old vertical cooler. I may be wrong.....but maybe these were manufactured by a different company. Think Peter is right about the other coolers...made by Mocal.
As I mentioned...this 7 row unit was installed on my 65 US S....it has the BMC pipes and brackets....assume it was fitted by the dealer in California where the car was sold.

I guess it depends on the way you want to count the rows. However see this topic on the forum which has a picture of a nos ST one which is the 13 row model. My nos one has the same number of rows as the one in that picture

That’s a great result!
Surprised to see it’s marked Competition Department instead of Special Tuning.
Has it been aqua blasted by any chance?

Nice!
As it looks like it’s never been drilled, nevermind fitted, is it repro or NOS?

No its new Toby, a repro moulded from an original. Our old one had the same text on it to the best of our recollection - been chatting to a past owner about it.
