Hi guys,
First time restoring a car and a mini. I have the boot and bonet lids (hope that's the word in English) with superficial rust (see picture). To fix it, I want to remove all these extra parts: the "X", the corner... I checked youtube but couldn't find any video on this topic. Could you give me a hand by telling what's the best way to do it? Any recommendation? If you know of a video, please, share the link.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Alex.

Hi Alex. You need to lell us where you are based because some of the info that we give out might not be relevant in other countries. Like this........
If you were in the UK for example, why not take the bonnet and boot lid to a chemical dipper and have it fully immersed/dipped to remove all of the corrosion, inside and out. It's going to save you a whole lot of work and distortion when you re-assemble it, believe me!.
Once it's done and rinsed and dried off, prime it up and do what you need to do. Flood the nooks and crannies and cavities with Supertrol-001 and that'll be the end of further rust and corrosion as we earthlings know it

I was thinking the same thing as Peter. Most smaller parts I use a rotary wire brush but when something like this is dipped it comes out clean and you can easily see if there is anything more serious to consider. Sand blasting is of course another option - or some other substrate that doesn't dent the panel.Peter Laidler wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 3:22 pm Hi Alex. If you want to take them apart, you'll first have to remove the rust and paint anyway to find the spot welds to drill out.

I had thought about sand blasting but on panels like these, with plenty of seams, gussets, box sections and black-holes, the compound just gets everywhere and difficult to remove

Hi Peter, thanks for the reply. I'm based in Shrewsbury, UK. If you know someone I could take it I'd appreciate the info. I could look online but better have some references.Peter Laidler wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 3:22 pm Hi Alex. Prostrip in Nottingham are most excellent - they dipped my A30 and the result was superb.

Sorry Alex, don't know anyone with those facilities off-hand but hopefully someone on the forum like the other Alex will come on board with closer help.
