Gearbox Reverse Rod Removal

Post by rogerotto66s »

Looking for a tip/trick!

I am one screw away from a complete disassembly of a gearbox.
The screw for the selector on the reverse fork rod seems unusually tight!
I am able to loosen the nut, just not the screw.
I did not want to ruin the screw.

Any thoughts?

I would use a punch on the centre of the bolt to send some vibration through to see if that helps to free the bolt. If not then apply some heat as it may have thread seal on if it has been previously rebuilt.

Thanks Jason!
I sprayed WD40, hit the head and waited!
All ended well … screw is out!

However …. Seems I did not see the screw for the 3+4 speed fork.
Not in a good position to hit it so I currently soaking it with WD40.
Will try to remove later.

If it is still stubborn following WD40, then hot air gun on the fork should help release the pinch bolt. As that one can only be tightened up with a spanner, in theory it should come undone the same way. I use a 6 point imperial hex spanner for that one.
Good luck….

WD40 would not be my weapon of choice - it`s like coming to a shootout with your butter knife.

Use something like cold shock spray. I use one from Presto, but depends what is available at your end.

Last screw is out!

Used WD-40 Specialist Penetrant Fast-Acting Formula …worked like a champ!

Also worked well on getting decent plunger out. Soaked for a few hours and it slide right out!

Now to clean up the gearbox and look on garage floor for a few synchronizer balls!
