MPI short engine in early mini

Post by swifty »

If I were to use a MPI short engine in a say early mini is there a way to create a spark for it WITHOUT using a ECU at all . Obviously I know there isn’t a distributor drive in the block . Is there a solution out there so this could be done and still connect to a mk1 loom … Shirley

Use a JKD 16v head with a dizzy up top

Hopefully someone’s got something more helpful than me!

Specialist Components supply a kit as below taken from their website .G

Specialist Components understands that car projects are exactly that – projects! We decided that we would create an upgradeable management system for the classic Mini. With a high specification and high value the Delta 400 allows the customer to map the ignition of their Mini electronically, with the option to upgrade this to our 5/7 Port or 16v injection system later.

The Delta 400 upgradable management system contains everything needed to replace archaic, unreliable and inaccurate distributor ignition with a modern programmable mapped electronic ignition system. A specific kit is available for Mini engines using our trigger wheel kit. The D400 system can easily be used in full 3D operation with either Weber DCOE or Dellorto DHLA carburetors (with a custom throttle position sensor kit) or with a MAP sensor.

The package contains:
• SC Delta 400 ECU
• Complete wiring harness
• USB CAN Interface
• Crankshaft position sensor
• Coil (bracket + leads)

Now supplied with high quality Magnecor ignition leads.

PLEASE NOTE: These kits are not suitable for cars fitted with Automatic transmission.

Medway thanks , thats exactly the type of solution I was hoping for . Can you imagine trying to find one of the distributors though .
Irmin thanks for the reply but the question was without using a ECU .

Hi Swifty, I would guess that the dizzy is standard and it's only where it's driven from that has changed.
