BAS don't do wool carpets for Minis/. The best Wool (alternative) is the early carpet offered by Newton.

Hi,

I'm restoring my Island blue and OEW, Austin Cooper 66' RHD, Home market, De-Luxe.
The Heritage Certificate claim for the trim "Cumulus grey and Gold".
Is the BAS Veltone light grey the correct choice for carpet  ?

Thanks

You probably want to move that question to 'Technical talk' if it hasn't already been answered.

- 1966 Austin Cooper S

- Almond Green / Old English White

Just want confirmation that I am making the correct selections.

According to AKD3510 the carpet color should be Grey or Cumulus Grey.

The detail listings indicate a Dark Grey was available on LHD only while Cumulus Grey was available on LHD and RHD.

BAS has a Light Grey and Dark Grey. The photo below shows these samples along with a
Sample of my original “faded” carpet. All samples are sitting on my original boot board.
Not sure the color of my original carpet.

The Parnell book indicates the boot board was normally covered in Cumulus Grey (p. 22) and the Cumulus Grey carpet
replaced the wool twist in NOV 1965 (45157).

BAS has two heel pads.
According to AKD3510 (see detail listing above) the heel pad ADA3779 was from 101 to 46931 approx.
So ... I assume this is the early Mk I so I will need the Late Mk I / Mk II.

I would be interested in seeing pictures of any cars with my same color scheme to determine if I should go
Light Grey or Dark Grey.

As always your feedback is appreciated.
So pleased to come across this thread. I ordered colour swatches for the veltone from BAS for the grey carpet and it turned up as per the small swatch which actually looks green! I contacted them and asked if this was correct to which they replied yes... As other posts have remarked ask for dark grey - as these posts are now a few years old perhaps they have since reduced their range.

Due to the green colour I was about to order the carpet from Newtons but (would prefer BAS as it seems more OE) what suprises me (fast becoming a bof) if they do still supply the dark grey? How is it that companies are so unbothered about providing accurate information and as a result affecting their sales????

The mantra these days seems to be 'customer is no longer king' and 'customer must do all the work themselves' what a crazy way to operate!

I was at BAS about 2 weeks ago, trying to source veltone carpet in Hazelnut for my 65/66 SDL. They don't do that colour (nobody does it) but gave me a swatch of a light tan colour (not veltone) carpet that's fitted to Jags. Very helpful gentleman; he also gave me a catalogue for their car range. His name is Rob.

The "Dark" grey Veltone carpet from BAS is an ABSOLUTELY 100% accurate match for the original 1966 on Veltone.

It was me who supplied a NOS sample for them to match & when I received the matched sample back it was almost indistinguishable from the original. I have posted images of the match on here before.

Grey veltone was only ever supplied in this dark grey colour any earlier lighter hues were all in wool. They do an inaccurate fantasy light grey which is the original colour they offered in the early 1990's. This was for a long time the best option available, but was always WAY too light in shade.

I've just spoken with Ruth and indeed the two swatches light and dark grey are both options. The light grey (almost green) is a wool carpet. I now await the dark grey swatch..... :D

Hi Richard and all,

I received form BAS the swatches of the two grey some months ago. The Dark version on the left.
In the back ground the Dark grey provided by the Newton Commercial

That's very useful to show the three options together, since my last post I have received the dark grey swatch from BAS and rather suprised by it, as it doesn't appear as a pleasant matching shade to my eyes, the Newtons is a better match to the other items including the seats.

However, this is a personal thing, I'm taken with Mark's past work on this as stated it is very close to the original carpet and I appreciate that Bas have gone to the trouble of replicating the heel pad and therefore likely to go this route. I'm sure once fitted it will be fine...

I’m interested to know whether anyone who has fitted BAS Veltone carpets has fitted underlay or whether the underlay attached to the carpet is enough. I have very nice thick black underlay from Huddersfield Mini spares. Do I keep it with the BAS air fit the BAS without underlay?

I've just completed the installation of the set I bought - it's very nice carpet but a little surprised by how much cutting adjustment was required on the front carpet....

Yes, I totally agree. But at least you have lots of extra material to make sure it fits perfectly when done. I leave mine in intact for a few months then trim it back once it has settled.

Hi,
I have a tweed grey mk1 look Mini.
I want to get as much of the original look as possible,
so I'm looking for a cumulus grey carpet.
What color was the carpet actually back then?
If you have any pictures, please let me know.
Looking at the thread, is Veltone's dark grey close?
Newtone's grey seems darker.
