Oil filter Head to factory metal pipe

Looking to change the oil filter head to one with an option to fit an oil temperature sender.

All of the after market products (Swift, MS, S-CAN) seem to say they don’t work with the factory metal oil transfer pipe…..or strongly advise a flex pipe conversion.

I am obviously missing something, why is this ?

Is it due to the fact that the later billet filter heads only have the 11/16" unf union?

Some info from the Minispares listing for their braided pipe MOC 1018:

If you have an engine later than 1990 with a 12A prefix engine number or SPI it is likely that you have the later type oil pipe from engine to filter head. This type has been known to leak and even pop out under arduous conditions and this replacement braided pipe eliminates this problem. Its other major benefit is that the bigger holes allow more flow of oil which can be a cheap source of more BHP and negates any need of an oil cooler under most circumstances.

Pre 1991 engines have 5/8" block union and 1/4" npt thread for the filter head

12A engines from 1991 on have 11/16"UNF block and filter head so this kit has 2-11/16"unf unions for use with later type filter head.

These are the following options of filter/block sizes for Pipe kits:

Block union 5/8" and filter head 1/4"npt use TAM2106BRAIDED

Block union 5/8" and filter head 11/16"unf use MOC1019

Block union 11/16" and filter head 11/16"unf use MOC1018

Block union 11/16" and filter head 1/4"npt use MOC1020

On the face of it, that Somerford kit looks just perfect - and so simple too. Looking at it from a simple engineers point of view, it's a classic example of the saying '....where there's a will, there's usually a simple way'. Brilliant idea

That said, it looks like you might have to very slightly bend the pipe to suit the slightly re-positioned/spaced banjo seating

Thanks for the replies, but this is 1/4" NPT, so still not sure why can`t use the original pipe.
wondered if it was the height of the connection ?

I did see that, but TBH, if I can, I would rather have a one piece head to save any issues with flow or misalignment - might be over thinking it though .. :roll: :lol: .

The metal pipes don't work with most (all ?) after market filter heads as the angle of the thread in the head for the pipe is different, most being dead up-right.

My own experience with braided hoses is sooner or later, the hose will leak.
