850? 998? Tell me the identity of my mini
850? 998? Tell me the identity of my mini
Hello
I am a mini owner living in South Korea.
I don't speak English, so please understand that I write through a translator.
I'm running a Mini that I estimate to be 1961.
Currently, the engine and gearbox are scheduled to be overhauled, and I found out before the repair, but I don't think a lot of 850 engines are repaired.
I am wondering if I should bring in 998 from Japan and swap or maintain 850.
Currently, my vehicle came through Japan, but the air conditioner was installed in Korea.
It's still hard to tell if my vehicle has an engine of 850 or 998
Can you give me some advice?
I want to import the engine from Japan, but I am currently unable to import it because I think the engine might be 998.
The difference from another mini is that the generator fixing position is located on the plug side, so it is difficult to check the fourth plug.
Would it be better to repair the 850?
Is it better to swap 998?
Can anyone else tell me what the current engine is?
I'm using hs2, but hs4 is not in the right direction, does it work if I exchange the intake manifold together?
Once again, I apologize for not being smooth because it is written through a translator.
Will all of the hs4 carburetor and intake manifold, 25d distributor kit, and other engine gaskets and gear rebuild kits be ordered and repaired? Swap 998 engines?
I'm thinking about it, but I don't know the information of my engine at the moment.
Guessing 850 is that the air conditioner is equipped in Korea and the mk1 magic wand gear is in use.
I can't find the number anywhere in the engine block.

Hi, very nice car. It's probably an 850. But to be sure it will be necessary to see the engine number. It may not be the original engine. The number is located on a plate facing upwards on the block behind the alternator. Cheers, Doug.

As an aside, I don't think it's a 61. The car number of my Woody is 160XXX and I think it was made in late 61. Your car number 691869 is much later than 1961. You can get a production certificate from British Motor Heritage Trust to confirm the exact date it was made.

If it is an 850, it will be cast in large numbers on the back of the block.....Around where number one cylinder is.....
If you reach down between the bulkhead, and, the back of the block, they are really easy to read with your fingers....

And remember no 1 plug is at the right hand end as you look in the engine bay. The water pump and radiator end. The 850 will be near the fuel pump.bwaminispeed wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2024 8:41 pm If it is an 850, it will be cast in large numbers on the back of the block.....Around where number one cylinder is.....

Modern transverse engines are actually mounted the opposite way to a Mini so it can confuse the unwary.
The forerunner of the Mini .. the A35 .. lots of similarities except rear wheel drive. My engine contains a lot of Mini parts now and the bodyshell some Metro brake parts!

Also, I believe all estates originally came with 850 motors.

That looks rather like a Japanese aircon setup in a non-standard car (there weren't many 1961/64 cars with a 1980s-on servo fitted), so it is entirely possible that the engine and (home made) chassis numbers may not reflect reality.
Without seeing photographs of the block, it's all guesswork.
