This 1920s image appeared on the net today and reminded me of the 1960's when I was a lad and Wells of Woodford were an Austin dealer and ran a team of "Wells Fargo" Mini variants at local Autocross meetings at which the late John White was a regular senior official for the BARC. I often visited the garage for A series parts!
Hey ho, the buildings have been demolished to make way for flats and a Tesco Express in the High Road, South Woodford.

I got more than a triple amount when served by a pump attendant on her last day. I think it was four books worth.

If you habitually frequent NEC, Beaulieu and many other 'prestige' events around the country (and europe), you may well have met the son of the proprietors. Spencer Elton is still very active trading in principally motoring books and large sized prints.
Fact is that Walkers at Corsley did not have the space for building more than one or two sprints so Eltons bodyshop (the name escapes me currently) was heavily used too. Spencer is always good for a tale or two, recounting his mis spent youth with celebs and fast cars!

I haven't bumped into Spencer for a good few years, but he can indeed spin a yarn  He also has an incredible memory of the weird and wonderful, many of which have passed, even if not through his hands, but onlyacross his radar.

He's bloomin' useless at email though, if I remember correctly.

He owned the Coldwell Mink in the dim and distant past before I bought it, and when I told him about it, he immediately was able to remember who he had got it from and a fair bit of the history, all whilst having a simultaneous conversation with at least one customer rooting through his piles of stock, all of which seemed to have fallen out the back of the van, but he knew where everything was, and how apparently rare everything was (doubly so if he had more than one in stock! )

I seem to remember one tale of woe where I think his wife had bumped into a Porsche 914 he had for sale in his garden, with his van. I was vaguely interested in the car, and asked if he was goign to fix it, or if the price was dropped to reflect the not insignificant damage to the car, where new bumpers are not easy to find, and certainly not in the Uk. 'Nah, I think it'll sell as is just fine. Very rare you know. Very few in the UK" "I know Spencer, I had one. But it's got a bloody great dent in it's nose" "ah. easy to find one, was it?" "no, not too easy, but I got one eventually" "see! told you!" he announced triumphantly.

I'm sure you will find him at Wiscombe VSCC this weekend.A few paces from his stall to the bar.Amazing recall and very helpful.Never too much
trouble to find a book, individual magazine or article. Five hundreds and motorcycles on Saturday usually.Great weekend.

The Mylchreests Group still operates in the Isle of Man.
Can the plate on the Maxi be read on the original pic?

Looks like it might be an early one. ;)
