Hi,
I'm just fitting my restored twin HS2 carbs to my MK2 Cooper S and am looking for some advice as to which is left and which is right with regards to the four levers that clamp on to the two link rods. I have a new kit and they are right and left handed, two right and two left. I have worked out which are right and which are left from the suppliers website pictures.
I was wondering if the left refers to the left as you look down onto the carburetors from under the bonnet or would it be as viewed from the perspective of the car ie left being near side for a UK car. Anyone know which is correct?
Thanks for your help,
Steve

The easy way to tell them apart is that the NUTS should be at the top. So that you can lock the clamps up from above while the actual clamp stops the screw heads from rotating.
Just a thought while we're here...... Don't screw them up as if you are doing jumbo jet wheel nuts. Just nip them up. It is the round surface that fully grips the axis link. I'd prefer to see flat washers there than spring washers.........
No doubt others will disagree, but there you go

Thanks Peter, that makes sense. I've loosly tried them in position with all nuts facing up and it seems that the left and right refered to in the drawings on the Somerford Mini website refer to left and right as in looking under the bonnet at the carbs fitted on the car. Not left and right as in 'near side' or 'offside' left and right.
The linkage kit of parts I got from Somerford Mini state on the bag genuine SU made in UK. The washers that came with them are the ones in the picture I attached and are just clean flat washers. For some reason they look like they are split washers but they're not but look like it. Must be a trick of the light. Everything looks clean and shiny to the eye. That said, is there anything to stop the nuts comming loose in time?
I will take your advice on not over tightening.
Thanks,
Steve
