Door escutcheon without screws ?

Just searching through box of door handle bits and came across some escutcheons without the option for fixing screws.

I have a feeling they could of come off a 63 car, but could be completely wrong, anyone confirm or not please

I seem to recall that there was a thread about this a couple of years ago - and no one, including me, could believe it!!!! But it's true. I suppose that the screw in the central arm at the inner end kept the bits in place.

I have only ever seen your photo of such a beast!

Yes, it seems that its just the pressure of tightening up the screw on the end of the handle that pulls it together, I tried it on a door and it works ok. If it is an earlier solution, I can see why you might move away from it.

Still be interested to know if anyone knows a date or can point out the original thread

My Australian parts book is 1964 and only shows the earlier type (I found it a little strange they made local versions of parts when they swapped to windup windows in 1965)

According to AKD3510 there were five different versions of escutcheons numbered 5 to 5D! I have three different versions shown in the picture. The screws and spacers were introduced from chassis 47949. I picked the best conditioned ones I had and drilled and tapped them to suit.

I started that thread as both our Feb and October 64s have the non crew type fitted. Not checked the 66.

I was actually having a bit of a... doh! moment...

When working on them.
I'd bought a new to me replacement handle from nick here on the forumn- as my handle, the screw threads are stripped out on the square shank.

I was just going to pop out in the unheated garage and swap them quick one day.

Kept trying to get the old plate off the old handle, and couldn't for the life of me- get it to slip past the "square" chunk coming out the side of the handle shaft.

Thinking it just held in by spring pressure- i tried pushing it in with a screwdriver... no go. Tried wiggling the plate around- maybe there's a certain spot... nope. What the heck?

Took it back out to the car, threw it back in the door... another day... warmer day!

Couple days ago, I'm showing my brother the new handle for the car, along with some other parts waiting to go on.

He turns the key in the lock.

The early types are rare so it seems a bit of a shame to have to drill and tap them
