Camshaft ID ?
Some 20 years ago I bought a complete power unit from a 1990 Rover Cooper. Due to budget constraints, I installed it in a customer project as received. Yesterday I removed and stripped the unit. I was pleased the cyl head is large intake valve and hard seats exhaust. I was surprised the block had been sleeved to std. I seem to recall there were A+ blocks that were factory sleeved due to porosity. My question has to do with the tab pump drive cam. It has a single raised ring between intake and exhaust lobes # three cyl. Cam and lifters show no signs of pitting or wear. As most who need a rebuild customer would like to squeeze a little more out of it. Thanks Steve (CTR)

You refer to the 1990's therefore am not sure whether this is relevant to that period or helpful but the cam fitted to the early Cooper S was AEG 510, this had a pin drive and was identified by a single ring, not sure of the exact position of this but still have the old 510 cam from my S, if I can find it amongst my various bits I will let you know. However, looking at an old 731 cam I have to hand this has 2 rings between the inlet /exhaust lobes on No 1 cylinder (nearest the timing pulley} I therefore expect the single ring on the 510 cam to be in a similar position.

Thanks, have looked though my books and found no mention of what is clearly A+. It's been in there at least 24 years I know of. Steve (CTR)

998 or 1275 ? Around that time you had the cooper conversions as well, but I think they kept the standard cam

Thank you for the info. I currently have three power units said to have come from Rover Cooper mainstreams. This one clearly has been into along the way. Having a pre Verto lightened flywheel and back plate and this camshaft. I'm building the last wide ratio transmission with 2.76 CWP and two overdrive drop gears. This will be the fourth and I'm out of NOS parts to do it. This unit has the big valve, hard exhaust seat head. The other two units which appear to have not been opened up have the small intake head. I suspect wrapping up the carbed Coopers they used what they had? I have had good luck using SW5-07 cams in these. Steve (CTR)

Hello.
Single ring A+ camshaft (slot drive) was mostly used on the 998.
It was used on basic spec Metro 1275 A+ (vans for example).
Most A+ 1275 camshafts did not have any 'rings'. Injection engines has two raised rings (Sprite, Autos) or three rings ( Coopers).
The MG Metro has a single machined groove.
There are a few other A+ camshafts. Maestro engines had different cams and a few odd-bods and the usual random Austin-Rover parts use.
MPi cams are interesting. Early ones had the trigger hand carved into the fuel pump lobe (some ive seen are very rough), and the dissy drive machined off. Later ones look more neat.

Single Ring on a Slot Drive with 1/2" Lobes was the 998 A+ Cam.
Timing is 9 / 41 on the Inlet with 0.318" Lift at the Valve and 49 / 11 for the Exhaust, with only 0.300" Valve Lift.

All A+ camshafts (1275 and 998) are 'wide lobe' half-inch slot drive oil pump.
The single ring did definitely get used in some 1275 engines.
