Hardy Spicer Flanges
Thought I would post these to see if anyone else has ever seen the hardy spicer output flanges that use pot joint shafts. This is only the 3rd set I have ever seen in nearly 40years of looking at oily gearboxes!, 2 sets have been on K plate MK3 S cars and the other set on a auto (1975 P reg) This is interesting for the MK3 S fitting as the pot joint output was not in common use until 1973 with the introduction of the 1832 rod box, having said that they must have been in development a while before introduction. Another piece of BL engineering history.
These are genuine BL items, oval in shape and not round like the ones currently manufactured by leading suppliers.
These are fitted to the 1128 box that has recently been removed from a MK3 S.

Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
That's very interesting Jason because I'm in the throes of re-bushing/machining the bores plus new oil seals of my 69 S. When you say that those illustrated are oval....... What do you mean? What is oval....., the bolt end of the output shafts? Or am I missing something?
Those shown look identical to mine, already re-bushed and in the lathe chuck as we speak. Except for the steel bung in the ends as per last photo where the retaining bolt sits. I will be machining my bushes to be output shaft dia +.0005" to .001"
Before I set about it, do you know of the spec o/diameter of the S output shaft. I'll be machining mine to suit the measured diameters.

Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
I've got two pairs of those "knock on" hardyspicer output flanges. One on a Quaife ATB and a spare set.
I thought they were only used on the last of the hardy spicer autos prior to the change to pot joints.

Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
I am pretty sure these were available over the counter ...way back as i have a few new sets here...still in their packages.
I do a little machining and trim them to look just like the real S item.

Hi Peter
The face of the flange being oval, that mates to the inner driveshaft joint - rather than completely round
O/D of output flanges shaft in good old imperial is 1.374”.

Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
@ imack - That was my understanding, but now I have seen a second set on a late MK3 it made me think….
Certainly no worries of oil leaks from around the bolt!!.
Here’s one to thrash around: later pot joint output shaft stronger than hardy spicer??

Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
Thanks for posting these up Jason, it's interesting. I've never come across a factory set, they were never fitted to our cars out here.
In regards to your question in your last post here ^ I haven't broken a HS output shaft. I have sheared off several of the earlier Pot type shafts, but the later ones I think that were introduced for the Metro Turbo I never had an issue with.
This is interesting and I don't doubt the dates. Just a further 'curiosity' here is that our Big Wheel Mokes also used the Hardy Spicer Unijoints, they all came ex-UK, along with the Gearboxes, yet they were fitting these in the bolt on form, up to mid-1975 before they went over to Pots. These were on Rod Shift Gearboxes from 1974. I'm unsure if the Rod Boxes were coming from the UK with them fitted or if they were swapped over locally though.Jason wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 2:07 pm ,,,,,, 2 sets have been on K plate MK3 S cars and the other set on a auto (1975 P reg) This is interesting for the MK3 S fitting as the pot joint output was not in common use until 1973 with the introduction of the 1832 rod box, having said that they must have been in development a while before introduction. Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
I have seen a few sets , my take is that they were for autos when the change from rubber cross to pot joints to use up the auto boxes . Some time late 72?

Re: Hardy Spicer Flanges
My mk3 does not have them I believe it is quite late in the production run, perhaps Simon Wheatcroft could comment on this subject
