period towing eye back
Hi,
for my Austin Cooper MK1 I 1967 I look to put a towing eye on.
Not on the front (because I have it there) but on the back ?
What are the nice period options ? I don't like a sparco
Cheers
Wesley

Re: period towing eye back
I reckon something like this would be pretty similar to any period type. I have no idea if this particular one will fit - just an example

Or maybe something like this painted black would blend in?

Re: period towing eye back
Yes Peter its a proper job & no one needs a Lathe to make one
I visited Stonehenge & Woodhenge just a few weeks ago..i expect those guys back when -they would have made one if they had access to a good Welder
School History told me it was the Romans who started to make them when they started the business called SPQR

Another phrase to describe, that towing eye would be described by Army recovery mechanics as '.....built like a brick shi.......er......, toilet...'

Re: period towing eye back
Before you start Wes, maybe you ought to ask whether the towing eye is an actual EYE or a circular hook, open at the top. Easier and more versatile to have a circular hook I'd say

Re: period towing eye back
Wesley .. just think about the loading that can be imposed on your Hardware Store fitting .. pleased be advised it will fail under the loading imposed during your Mini,s recovery should your car get stuck in a ditch.
To deal with the fears of Peter.. this design of tow eye was best as i know sold by the company SPQR .. it is effective as a round circle without any opening, the 4bolt fitting spreads the loading over the rear subframe in an area that was not designed to take such loading .. last thing we need is to bend the rear subframe on a recovery ..This SPQR design tow eye ..or who-ever can claim the original design ..does the job & will be easy to make & fit.
( other than if you have a rear anti-roll bar)

Re: period towing eye back
Here you go on the MK1 website , product info for SPQR range products, number 19 is the towing eye..
Nice little product for someone to remake, I would of thought

Re: period towing eye back
Please remove the coating and run a seam weld around each one, looks extremely prone to failure (in my opinion)

Re: period towing eye back
I must look, because In Belgium you normally don't do anything on the subframe.
