Installing a self parking wiper motor
I am planning on fitting a self parking wiper motor to a mk1 car. Its a Lucas DR3. It has three spade terminals one marked earth. Does anyone know how this is wired? Thank you

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
don't the self parkers normally have six or seven wires & a special switch, i'll ask my mate who used to do all our electrics

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
I have one of these in my Traveller. Simply connecting the ground terminal a ground point doesn't work, so I'm interested in the answer as well.

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
I bet that wiper maestro Nick Rogers from MiniBitz will know the answer to this. Where are you Nick.......?
And don't forget, that it's irrelevant whether the motor is single or two speed because it will only self park from the slow speed setting

Look at the wiring diagram of a Mini with self-park.
The forerunner of the Mini .. the A35 .. lots of similarities except rear wheel drive. My engine contains a lot of Mini parts now and the bodyshell some Metro brake parts!

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
The first 3 terminal (self-parking?) wiper motor appears to be on Mk2's. The wiring diagram shows terminals 1,2 and E. The E terminal connects by a black (B) wire to the main ground terminal on the fuel gauge. Terminal 1 connects by black green (BG) wire to the wiper switch terminal 6 and 2 is a power source by a green (G) wire taken from terminal B (the power terminal) of a 2-terminal flasher unit. I think that's basically what I did when I did the wiring on my Mk1 Traveller 14 years ago but the self-parking feature did not work.
I had a look at my wiper motor setup. I have a Mk1 wiring harness which only has 2 wires for the wiper motor, black (B) and black green (BG) which I have connected to terminals 1 and 2, respectively on the wiper motor. The black (B) is ground and the black green (BG) goes to the wiper switch presumably to a terminal with a switched power source. It looks like a bit of re-wiring might be all that's required. Look at a wiring diagram of a Mini with selfpark ... indeed! What sage advice! I have a feeling though that I might need a Mk2 wiper switch with the right terminals to make it work and the Mk1 flasher unit has 3-terminals, but including a B. Actually, I don't really hate the manual parking wiper motor because I try to avoid driving in the rain anyway, so its possible I might not bother.

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
The Australian self park wipers used the normal Lucas 57SA switch. Wiring diagram in this post.

Single speed wiring
Permanent live - Green
Switch - Green black
Earth is obviously black

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
I corrected a mistake in my post. The 3-terminal (1,2 and E) wiper motor appeared on Mk2's. The configuration of the terminals of the switch on the wiring diagrams between Mk1 and 2 diagrams is different.

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
Thank you everyone - this is helpful. The wiper is single speed. The self parking part is internal. The gear housing has a wire with mechanism internally that maintains/cuts feed to motor.

I believe the wire on the housing is to adjust the stopping point by turning the lid.

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
You need 2 plus cables for a wiper motor to be able to park itself. One is switched directly via the toggle switch to switch the wiper ON and OFF.
In addition, the wiper motor requires an internal switch. This continues to supply the motor with power when the toggle switch is in the OFF position until the motor has reached its park position and then switches off the second power supply.
I used a later wiper motor with 5 connections in my Broadspeed and controlled it via an MK1 toggle switch. I needed 4 connections to switch ON/OFF and PARK separately. The 5th connection would be for the second speed, but this cannot be controlled with the MK1 toggle switch.
You can see how I wired it up in the wiring diagram. It works pretty well.

There is a superb pdf covering the Lucas 1-speed and 2-speed self-parking wiper motors here...

Re: Installing a self parking wiper motor
My ‘65 Elf had been fitted with the later round wiper motor, although it was not working correctly.
I bought a small wiring loom and a 2 speed switch, so I now have 2 speed self parking wipers. Inside the car all looks standard.
Under the bonnet, I have the round rather than the square motor. As I am not a rivet counter I am happy with it.
