Lucas C40 Dynamo - refurb..

Post by richardACS »

With my 1965 Cooper s - would like to refurbish the dated dynamo - having stripped it apart, the central part - Armature? looks to be in good condition and likely needs a clean up - what is the best medium to clean? scouring pad with some carb cleaner?

The 'field coils' is that the right term? attached to the outer shell has a sort of cotton wrap - this is disintegrating - is this important? also very difficult to release the large cross headed fixing, however if the cotton wrap is not an issue perhaps its best to leave them in place and just clean up the magnetic surface?

Are there repair kits available specifically the bearing and the fibre seal on the output shaft?

Finally the cooling blade - is this fixed by the pressure of the pulley once its fitted? as after removing the pulley it seems to spin below the keyway?

Finally, finally what is the finish of the pulley? is it green painted or zinc plated?

Thx in advance...

DON'T undo the big philips screws in the side. They are done up using an adapted fly-press. The shellac coated cotton wrap is to prevent shorting out. You could cover and seal unless anyone has a better idea. I

Apologies for using the wrong tool name/terminology. Just me thinking back to the big 24v generators we used to overhaul - using an adapted fly-press gadget But if you ain't got one, don't undo them I say

My Bodge that worked.. used an Impact Driver with a Phillips type end that fitted the Dynamo case Screw ..Given the Impact driver a good clout with a Lump Hammer a couple of times & the result those screws shifted given they are very tight .. replaced in the same way using an impact driver with a spot of loctite on the Phillips Screw just in case .. the Impact Driver needs to have a Phillips driver adaptor that sensibly fits those dynamo case screws as their drive socket size seem to be a bit odd ?
Next time i think i will send the Dynamo to Dynalite & get them to put an alternator into my own dated case.. given very pleased with the Dynalite products that i have .

I used a 6202RS bearing on my dynamo. A fiver from the local bearing shop for a skf.

Short of a quick rinse in soapy water, I'd strongly suggest you steer clear of the windings. The lacquer / varnish on them is the only insulation they have, scratch it & you could short the coils and everything will get expensive fast.
