John ‘Jumbo’ Godard’s Downton Mini

Post by Pete »

A few Downton converted Coopers were shipped down under for racing in the 60s and this is one of them. John ‘Jumbo’ Goddard’s Cooper (S?). Goddard was quite a character in his day (well worth a read up on!) and owned a couple of other Minis including a supercharged Traveller and Twin Cam Minivan! Not to mention the ex Hamilton Le Mans D-Type to run about in.

We had a gullwing of his in stock for a wee while. Ithink I sold it to a guy who has a Roadster and wanted a 'brace' - it was either unique or one of 2 converted to RHD. From memory the reason Mercedes didn't do any was the not insignificant challenge of there being the slanted engine exactly where the steering needed to be. He managed it, and I don't remember it being too bad....

What a brilliant story starring what must have a really interesting character, they certainly don't make them like that anymore .
