New mini shop started.

Post by 360gts »

I started clearing and doing site prep a few of weeks ago....removing some really big spruce trees....leveling and grading....finally, almost ready for the footings to be poured.
It will be attached to my big two storey shop....vaulted ceiling with a new 4 poster hoist.
It was either get rid of some cars ..OR, expand. Expand was the winner.
Hoping to get it framed up prior to the snow arriving. Will be 30" X 24'...the plan is to put the completed cars in there....create a small personal museum.
Will add a few pics now and then to show the progress...Hope Mark doesn't mind.

Haven't been doing much on the project....smoke from the wildfires is intolerable at times. Hard to work out there with the smell and the smoke.
Today it cleared a bit....hope to get back at it tomorrow.

"Where there's smoke - there is fire!"
Isn't that a bit risky to keep your precious likkle ones so close to all the flammable stuff around?
A bunker would have been the better choice

The wildfires are over the mountains in British Columbia and way up north.....the smoke and ash travels a long way.

I would love to visit your “personal” museum when finished.
Short drive from Spearfish, SD!

Well, the one man band show is slowly achieving some results ...at last
Getting concrete delivered here is like pulling hens teeth. Had to wait and wait and wait some more.
Eventually, they delivered....walls poured....stripped the forms and started real work.
You don't want to know the cost of 3 meters of ready mix......I don't ....but I had to pay the premium. Carbon tax...environmental tax....small load tax.....out of town delivery premium.....then the GST (Like your VAT).......total cost was $2100.00 (approx. 1200 pounds)
I am starting to make good progress now.
Should have the joists installed in a couple of days and then I will be laying the 3/4" T & G plywood for the floor.
Will see if I can hire a couple of framers to frame up the walls and the roof joists.

Hello Andy,
I could fit 10 minis in there with good space around them...plus I will have a four post lift as well.
Been a bit of a grind so far.....however, it is really moving ahead now. Unsure as to whether I will shut it down over the winter or hope for good weather and forge ahead. Hoping to have the floor on this weekend.
Cheers
Dermott

4x Post Lift with a Hyd; Jack that traverses the full length.. mine gets a lot of use (no need to grovel on the ground when working on the car.)

If you have the 4x Post dimensions maybe worth casting the lift post floor securing stud mountings into the concrete base.

Very nice project, that's a great way to separate a work shop and keeping the special cars clean...

Joists are all in place and ready for the decking....work slowed for a couple of days due to rain...which we dearly need here
BTW, these are 16 inch deep fir plywood joists on 16 inch centers....massive Lbs per sq. ft. loading.

Just occurred to me Dermot. At this early floor-laying time, wouldn't it be a good time to install a pit. A VERY useful thing to have and cheap to do at this stage. Hoists have their place but a pit has its place too. Unlike a hoist, when the pit isn't in use, the pit boards just form part of the floor.....

The loading on 16" joists will be amazing - enjoying this post!

Darn!!!! Was wondering if some smarty pants would suggest a pit....And then there is good old Peter.....OK, Peter, you make good sense.
I am going to look at this tomorrow and see if I can do it.
I would only have 5 foot below the floor line....but, I could have a couple of temporary wooden rams that would sit on the floor to raise the minis up enough to provide 6 foot headroom.
Good job you raised the point now......does make sense and heck of a lot cheaper than a 4 poster hoist.
I already have a hoist in one of the shops.
I do like the idea.........could end up with a 32 inch wide opening....length is flexible....probably 8-10 feet long.
This could change my whole overall design....could go to a regular roof style (4/12 slope with engineered trusses) instead of a more expensive rafter roof. Considerable savings here.
Will update after I look at it tomorrow.
Thanks Peter 🍻🍻🍻🍻
