Works Mini Project..

Post by Canuk »

New to the site, great to be amongst like minded people. Here some pictures of my car as it progresses...

No particular works car being copied, but thought Paddy Hopkirk 37 should be on the car..

Installed the dash (es)..Waiting for my various parts to arrive then to drilling holes...

Trying to locate Black Crinkle paint so hoping to find at the Ancaster British car meet in April.

I attach some more updated pictures at the weekend.

Thank you for the welcome, and the car input..

Yes that was me bidding the the LL Ram pipes, my car like many lost some original parts over the years, IE, Front seats, HS2 air filter box and associated parts, brake servo to name a few.

The two front seats are quite cool though being a set of Paddy Hopkirk seats, not sure of their age but look "Period"...

You have to be so careful on Ebay not to pay to much for the items...Case in point I bid on a 7 day auction for an old flick switch, stayed as only bidder for 2.20 pounds, then 6 days in someone came and it went to 3.20 pound...It was now at its limit in my opinion, BUT I was prepared to pay say 10 pound..So I put a bid on it for 20 pound, who would of thought someone beat me at 21 pound...thats $34 cdn plus postage and taxes... I picked a similar NOS switch up days before for $5 landed..

I purchased the Head light covers and they arrived yesterday...It will be really hard to bring myself to drilling holes into the wings....Better not slip with that drill bit

Put some tape on the fender where you are drilling...it will at least prevent any small scratches from a mildly wandering drill bit. Good luck!

Couple of Q's for you...

Do you have an photos of the hood strap and where you drilled/installed it? That's on my to-do list soon.

Also, how do the 'works' dashes install/attach to the stock dash? I'm going to try and make my own smaller version for the passenger side.

Thanks,
W

Oh, and I've found black crinkle spray paint at Canadian Tire before. Practice on something else first so you get the effect you want. There's a bit of technique to spraying it right.

To answer both questions...

I managed to find a picture of the strap on a works car. Once the bonnet is raised the first strap is bolted directly on the top lip just over from bonnet catch. Place it so that the nuts are clear

I closed the hood attached the other half and marked (On masking tape) the bonnet three holes...I did'nt pull it to tight so when on the chrome buckle is clear of the paint.

I will take some pics at the weekend and post...

With regards to Black crinkle paint...Plasti-Kote used to be in CT and now other brands are in its place. I read up that CT VTH that they carry does an engine crinkle paint. I checked but not in stock...I would like the Plasti-kote if I can find it.

There some great U tube video's of the "Technique" for this paint, but you are right do some test pieces first...

The big British car day to start the season is the Ancaster Market (April) just outside Hamilton, hopefully I'll find some goodies there..

With regards to the Dash..I think the works dashes where installed with out the worry of asthetics..I wanted the dash to go in without screw holes showing.

I purchased the dash via Ebay, when it arrived I went to install it and it was not a good fit...I wrote asking for installation instructions..On my own there...

So on Saturday I spent a few hours looking at my options...

The drivers side I cut the rear lower aluminium lip off and now could push and slide the dash in...Once I have painted it I will drill the inside lip into the lower kneepad, as it is its in really tight.

The passenger side I did the same except I used very small 'G" clamps to hold it in....

I have fitted the door bracket and fuse holder now, will put more pics up on Saturday.

:D
You have a very nice Mk2 S! Ancaster is the great show after the thrilling Winter!
I once lived in Ont and did you see the red 69S (with white roof having Ont plate) still around?
Keep the works look going, I nearly bought the works dash from your seller!
its better we made our own!
Should go to Miniman in Ottawa as they have alot of old stock!

Appreciate the feed back, I am always looking for places over here to get parts. To be honest most are for the MKIII and on...As an example my car after being resprayed did not get the chrome window surrounds put back. I bought a set ($200) and they where for a MKIII...I ended up damaging one, so this time I re-ordered and requested they check that it is for a MKII and I got the same size sent.

In the spring I will get the roof re-sprayed in white...

I will checkout Mini Man in Ottawa... :)

Tell me about it!!! not sure if you can see but the previous owner when having the car resprayed painted the lip black...So I wont have much choice until it gets a respray again..I may ask if they can paint the lip red??....

Unfortunatley when you buy cars restored by other people it can be a lot of work correcting mistakes...

The big problem is shipping...I tried purchasing Plasti-Kote paint via Amazon and as soon as my Canadian PC went in they could not ship...

Have you tried the VHT paint? I know that it is listed over here through Canadian Tire, If feedback OK, I will get them to order it for me.
