Leading the 66 RAC??
There is no evidence that Aaltonen was ever leading. Makinen was until Kielder on the final leg. Fall was pushing for higher places near the end when he went off on his "home" stages and dropped back. Neither he nor Aaltonen was likely to have caught Kallstrom or Trana for second and third? Soderstrom inherited the lead from Makinen and won by around 13 and a half minutes.
Despite three good final positions for works CooperSs, Only the Makinen S was ever competitive with the works Cortinas on the 66 RAC and the winning Soderstrom car was the slowest of the 4 works Cortinas. BMC added to the situation by electing to run the standard camshaft in all but the Makinen car.
