Re: YJV 823 - 1071
I managed to get a copy of the Tech Del information sheet, the 4.5 inch mag wheels weigh in at 5lbs 12ozs (there's an attached note to say 5lbs when weighed)! My calcs make this 2.6kg. I have now purchased a set and they weigh in correctly. They will now go off to Jemisons for checking and renovation....

Re: YJV 823 - 1071
My 10x6inch Minilight Mags weigh 2.9kg & the Minilight 10x 4.5 inch Mags Weigh 2.49kg.. i give them a visual check without tyres then holding the wheel at the center & strike the Rim with a screwdriver handle & they will give a load Ring and maintain the noise just like a Church Bell suggesting they are not cracked.. i paint strip with an alloy stripper suitable for alloy & magnesium purchased from the local light Aircraft Paintshop .. when these rims come back from vapour blast i will coat them with the prep coat "Alochrome 1200" A&B this stuff is two pack 1ltr kit costs about £100 available from all good Aerospace Suppliers such a LAS.. Alochrome can be a brush on leaving a light gold surface finish that can & should be overpainted.
Before Tyre fit i will coat the inner rims with Bilt Hamber clear wax as that is the where the white stuff starts hidden from view.
Just my take on this Mag Wheel subject but always will listen to the experts.
I am also thinking to use gas for inflation but have not used this before.

Re: YJV 823 - 1071
Thank you for yout response and tips, I like the info on the Alochrome 1200 and Bilt Hamber (although a product I've come across being Lanoguard a by product of sheep skin oil - which is a nice organic fluid) - I will do the ring test. But my intention is to send to Jemisons but do want to have them ultimately finished in a wet paint. I think powder coat as a final coat has them looking too uniform and over restored - plus my experience with other alloy wheels has been that they corrode under the powder coat...Polarsilver wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 10:15 pm My 10x6inch Minilight Mags weigh 2.9kg & the Minilight 10x 4.5 inch Mags Weigh 2.49kg.. i give them a visual check without tyres then holding the wheel at the center & strike the Rim with a screwdriver handle & they will give a load Ring and maintain the noise just like a Church Bell suggesting they are not cracked.. i paint strip with an alloy stripper suitable for alloy & magnesium purchased from the local light Aircraft Paintshop .. when these rims come back from vapour blast i will coat them with the prep coat "Alochrome 1200" A&B this stuff is two pack 1ltr kit costs about £100 available from all good Aerospace Suppliers such a LAS.. Re: YJV 823 - 1071
I'm endeavouring to educate myself on bits of information that I seem to have concerning the FJ 1071 engine, I've been searching in the search box but to no avail. Specifically trying to understand what 1071 engine would have been fitted to my 6/63 production date? What is a flat front?
The block I have is dated April 64 and would like to get one from perhaps April/May/June 63 but would help to understand what the distinguishing features would be...

Re: YJV 823 - 1071
PLEASE don't anyone get carried away with the idea that making a wheel ring means it's not cracked.
It most certainly doesn't!

Re: YJV 823 - 1071
I wouldn't buy one off ebay without an ABSOLUTE guarantee that it works OK.
I have had a couple off this guy, they have always worked OK.

I also have a couple of Speedwell gauges for sale.
Speedwell Weston - £420.00 (Full Recon)
Speedwell Smiths - £325.00 (Excellent original)
Or there is of course always these, which are new units & excellent.
