CV joint wont budge
I'm trying to get an engine end CV joint off the drive shaft... one side split fine and came off with a smack of a hammer. But the other just wont budge. I have sawn off the cap that covers the end of the shaft and tried to smack the shaft out of the bearing case but it still wont budge. I've also tried the other way and held the shaft in a vice and smacked the bearing case... nothing but sparks. Its even been soaked in WD40 overnight... any other tips?

If the spring clip has been damaged it might not bury in the groove, I once used a hollow jack and a piece of pipe, made some collets to secure the set up. . It worked . Didn't do the clip much good .

Can you explain that in more detail please Ronnie?Ronnie wrote:If the spring clip has been damaged it might not bury in the groove, I once used a hollow jack and a piece of pipe, made some collets to secure the set up. . It worked . Didn't do the clip much good .

If it is that seized, probably due to water ingress and then rust, =I would be attacking what is lft of the bearing cage with a grinder.
Alternatively I could let you have a s/h driveshaft?

Hmmm, I might take you up on that, it's a passenger side one. The outer part of the bearing cage is now gone as I smashed it off... The only part that is left is the inner part that actually fits onto the shaft.GraemeC wrote:If it is that seized, probably due to water ingress and then rust, =I would be attacking what is lft of the bearing cage with a grinder.

Sounds as if you need to get it under tension before you smack it with a hammer. Like two cut down bolts and nuts, placed between it and the casing on opposite sides, then undo the nuts on each side a bit at a time, then when it is really trying to push it apart, smack it with a hammer then.
something like that anyway, thats if I understood what the problem is in the first place, ummm

I had the same problem on an S shaft!
Mostly is the clip jammed in the grove, not rust,Try hit it the other way round and then hit in the normal direction by brass hammer!
Or woest case by the grinder or Oxy torch to cut the cage!
My case I had to reuse the CV joint!

Re: CV joint wont budge
2 possibilities;
1) cage rusted onto shaft. SOLUTION, Heat WD40 & a big hammer or replace.
2) Damaged circlip. SOLUTION. Clean up so yoy can see what is happening, carefully remove circlip using screwdriver & pliers, remove end.
It will definitely be one of the two above.

Re: CV joint wont budge
How would I removed the circlip Mark if its inside the inner part of the cage? I've just tried swinging on the vice and using a chisel and realy smacking it but it really aint having it.
I'll get a photo...

If the cage is on, you should be able to see the circlip on the end of the shaft, it goes on past the end of the cage, a little. This is assuming that you have removed the outer pot joint and just the cage remains on the shaft.

tom
just cut it with a thin cutting disc in two places so it comes off the shaft. - cut along the 'valley' part of the inner coupling where the metal is the thinnest
looking at the state of that one its well rusted onto the splines

Re: CV joint wont budge
I can't visualise what Mark is decribing and as your pcitures show there is no visibility of the circlip.
Without resorting to cutting the cage off, the only way I think they will separate now would be to position shaft so it hangs through your vice whilst the 'wings' of the cage are supported on the top of the vice. Then give the end of the shaft in the middle of the cage a good tw@tting with a drift and the biggest therapy stick you have. Clear your bench first to save picking everything up off the floor!
However I would be looking at using that shaft as a door stop now and replacing it with another. There is a slight risk that with continued efforts to separate them you might inadvertantly bend the shaft slightly causing all sorts of head scratching later.

That shaft is a scrapper, chuck it away.
The end on the race is different to some I have seen where you can get to the circlip OK. On that I doubt you can.
That said it looks buggered anyway.
