'Morris' the 1071 joins the fleet
Kept this under my hat for a few weeks till the reveal at our biggest local show yesterday.
It recently became available as a long time friend and club member was now unable to drive it for a variety of reasons and as he said 'he'd had his fun with it after 30 years' and it was time to move on. Without going into too much detail some local dealer types, both with names that some on this forum will recognize were wanting to buy it but the price kept going down as they found more 'wrong' with the car. He was quite upset to be fair, and relieved when i insisted on buying it at the original price he'd been given. He was glad it was going to the proverbial 'good home' someone he knew would take the time to go through the car and put it right, and not rip it apart, new panels, paint, newton commercial interior then flog it for profit. We'd spent time putting his sons van right a couple of years ago and it was now so good they were keeping that for the longer term 'its never been as good' (shot myself in the foot there to get a good van cheap didnt I !!!)
Pics from day of collection (the hottest day ever in the UK), I can confirm you can burn your hands on trailer ramps if you park it in the sun in such temps..

He'd had it put through an mot at the garage where it has always gone and it had failed, some 'structural corrosion' but also some stuff caused by lack of use and maintenance, 1 caliper had seized (and they couldn't source a replacement!!, but i was providing one FOC as a mate) wiper blades were kaput, and i cant recall what else. So out first port of call was to put it up on the ramps and start a shopping list of parts. This as you can imagine, soon became a big list, and as i dug in i found more hidden issues, the list was all the usual - track rod ends (they missed that) door locks, boot lock - we'd drilled that out for him about 5 years ago after it got damaged and he'd never fixed it.. multiple seals, wiper arms and blades, wheelbox chrome kit, to replace the split originals, boot lid liner, all sorts, I later had to add on all the bolts and fixings that hold the door locks in place, the drain tubes in the door, the sliding window stuff, it seemed never ending.
Its fair to say zero maintenance had been kept up, any expense was only if it needed it to pass an mot each year. Since purchase in '93 it had had no panelwork, but did have a blowover at some point, and the head was reconned.
Theres not much paperwork, just a few reciepts and the previous owner search carried out way back when you could still do that which shows it stayed around grimsby area all its life up to the 90's.
The biggest thing to tackle with limited time was the holes in the inner sills and some bad bits at the same points on the outer, its not got much sill left, more a collection of patches. Its had front and rear floors, but the rears dont even look like a normal floor panel?
Ideally, and at some point, it will get the full floor treatment but for now patch repairs it is, its not going to be any worse than the mess it was.
While my brother tackled the welding I stripped the doors down and rebuilt them, altered the grill mounting, spotlight mounting, changed the oil and filter and fixed some of the engine oil leaks.
Once complete (again -for now) it was looking much healthier underneath. the back box also got a temporary reskin as well, but honestly, its knackered. The brakes were bled, the rears stripped for inspection and re assembled, the carpets were glued back in, and after retapping every hole in the crossmember the seats were refitted, and we were ready for yesterdays show, after the obvious once over with some polish and was, no time for anything more comprehensive.
One of the biggest things I've found is how much was held together with blue tack and theres more to find. door locks, switch panels, trim, stickers, all secured with the blue stuff. There were some pretty blatent bodges and the one safety critical item that we've had to sort.

Thanks Mark, and for your earlier guidance.
At the moment the previous owner has kept the Smiths Timer that was in, because he says it cost a lot and took a lot of finding, whether he ever lets it go I'm not sure, cant see it sitting right in his modern!
We are changing out the harnesses for a conventional static belt like my '63, I'm just not happy with putting someone in there with that combo, if it had high back seats of some style then maybe but not as it is.
Future jobs will be some brake parts, fix the remaining oil leaks, possibly remove the quickshift, and wire in some of the gauges so they actually do something!

so some more detail pics and questions, what are these front lights, I'm not familiar with any having the 3 dimples on them?
The stopwatch was removed as it didnt work anymore, i would have left it! but the bracket has a neat insignia on it, make?

pressed submit a bit early there by accident!
does anyone reproduce these floor covers? so i can have some spares? more bluetack! the electric looking lucas demister thinks on the front windscreen are controlled by this 'R' switch/dial or whatever??, and yes! now for the first time i see the bit of wood and the loose screws.. Fire extinguisher was blue tacked to the door pocket (as you'd expect by now!) was there some sort of bracket i could look for to remount it as a feature but more securely, its still got fluid in as well. and finally just a nice feature i like,

That looks like “Works” Bluetac to me , almost a shame to remove it

Absolutely GREAT car!
To try & answer your questions in order;
1) Don't know the maker of the clip. But clips like that were sold via Les Leston.
2) They are standard Lucas sealed beams. They used to come with those 3 pips on.
3) I haven't seen that floor protector before, but I sell similar ones on the main site.

4) A normal Terry pipe clip was used for the fore extinguisher. I think that Gordon "Catmint" sells these. If he doesn't, I may be able to find a suitable one.

we get those sorts of temps here nearly every day in summer even the ground gets hot just wear gloves when handling any steel things

Thanks for replies chaps, gives me research / shopping for tonight.!
I took pics of the spotlights as well so I can identify them better, I can post those tonight when home. I think we had them identified as fogs and spots with a separate relay and switch for each pair as i recall putting all the lights on dragged the engine down!. Ive already fitted a much brighter led red bulb for the rear side and stop lamp, as a safety thing i do on all my cars. The one thing I don't need help identifying is the speedwell throttle pedal, that one's nice and obvious.!

outer lamps, saw plenty of these on the autojumble on sunday, never got time to go back and actually see if any had better chrome than mine though
The rheostat knob pictured earlier, does nowt, theres no wires on it, the front screen demisters are actually wired back to the fusebox, or one of them anyway...needs investigation and tidying up.
inner lamps, much better chrome on these, there is some writing on the front i can see now, i just need to get a better angle to see what it says.
Fuel cap is a weird one.
Passenger sunvisor is nowt like the one i got from minispares to make a matching pair, so is it an earlier one, or the minispares ones are wrong.?
tonights job was investigate the loose central dash and that bit of wood, it turns out the wood was all that was holding it all in place, the black binnacle wasnt held to the metal brackets as the screws were all wrong, not tight etc, and the cream central binnacle behind was loose as the two top screws (self tappers obvs!!) were in the bulkhead but the plastic itself was broken, bits were found and supergluing will continue and I'll source all the correct screws etc.The rheostat knob pictured earlier, does nowt, theres no wires on it, the front screen demisters are actually wired back to the fusebox, or one of them anyway...needs investigation and tidying up.

ta! MOT next weekend, yes, i know it doesn't need one but its better to start the period of no mot's with a clean slate.
Jobs done since last update have mostly revolved around getting the dash squared away, repairing the centre binnacle removing the homemade 'wings' that hold the (missing ) metal bracket, fitting said metalwork, fitting correct plastic outer binnacle, replacing bust oil pressure gauge/water temp gauge with the correct temp one side and oil pressure the other.
Also replaced the washer pump with one that'll actually suck the water out of the reservoir, fitted a non return valve to the pipe.
Jobs this weekend are to fit new voltage stabilser and battery clamps.
So basically just working through it slowly.

Passenger visor is the same type as my 63 but the vinyl pattern isn’t.
A (lazy??) PO painted mine black decades ago but the actual pattern is the same as the headliner I bought from Newton (for my Traveller) some time ago.
The pips on the headlight are there to correctly position the headlight alignment device that was used in our roadworthy (MOT type) test many years ago.
