Ignition light

Post by davidnutland »

Hi I wonder if anybody has the answer to this one, my warning light has a low glow when the engine is running, it is bright as usual then just glows when the engine starts, it is a new loom, alternator and a control box that has been doctored to suit any thoughts as to what I have missed.

I have the same symptom with a later, alternator fitted mini.

Its been like this for 15 years without ill effects.

Interestingly, the dim glow changes when you're on or off the throttle.

However, I'm not sure what effect a "doctored" control box might have.

I say that it is a failing diode pack in the alternator. It is charging - but only just keeping up........

Is there a diode between the ignition switch and the warning light? I think if you convert to an alternator without adding one you could get this behaviour (there is 12v from the ignition switch one side of the warning light, and 12v(ish) from the alternator the other side when the engine is running).
