Also did the 68 and 69 COI with Adrian and Beatty. By 69 it was Group 6 spec and ran with JAP Magna wheels!

Rallied by Adrian and other members of the Boyd family in Ireland. Reshelled into a new MK2 shell with bits transferred over from the original shell, (which was the JMO969D RAC car, 1966!) after a roll on the 74 Texaco, including the wiring loom and continued rallying, got a photo of it on the 75 Galway International with the same shell it has now. Owned by my Dad for over 30 years, we went to Ireland to buy it, now belongs to Mini Sport and is due back on the road in the near future,. Genuine Abingdon seats, wiring, sumpguard, dash panels etc.

Re: JBL 494D
JBL494D a few weeks back. I drove it , albeit only around the car park, sounds 'fit'! Built to 66 RAC build sheet, been waiting 36 years to drive it, i was at school when we went to Ireland to buy it. Everything electrical works on it's original wiring harness, thanks to the late Stan Chalmers.

That's brilliant Steve. I personally enjoyed talking to your Dad about the cars history. Am I right in thinking that it is now owned by Minisport ? You should do an article / thread on the car detailing it's post Abingdon history..... and at some point you should be the person to drive it in anger !!

Re: JBL 494D
Yep owned by Minisport, and i will hopefully driving it on an event at some point, probably a ' demo' event rather than competitive to keep originality , you would have to compromise that for a modern event. Biased i know, but it must be one of the most genuine ex works cars with the majority of its original components . The shell is the original that the car was reshelled into after a roll on the 1974 Texaco rally.spoon.450 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 10:06 pm That's brilliant Steve. Re: JBL 494D
Looks like SS1, Bramshill later in stage, from the dirt on the side. The thin trees seem to be providing a somewhat optimistic escape route for spectators. Oh, hang on, I was behind a similar small tree just in from the stage finish when Makinen in GRX5D nearly sideswiped it.
Err... I mean a GRX5D, one of many...
For those who like "what ifs", Kallstrom with a 648 in JBL494D might have seen off Soderstrom's Lotus and won?
and who was pushing for using the 510 cam in all the other cars? It was surely overreaction to the 65 RAC slippery fest. Was it a Finn with the initials R.A.?

Re: JBL 494D
Your spot on , after the snow and ice of 65, Rauno thought the 510 would be better, which it would be! But in 66 minimal ice and no snow. On one stage with views of a large stretch of a stage a reporter stated that Makinens car, running a 649, was visibly quicker than the other works cars running a 510. JBL, with a 510, had 77 at the wheels , Timos with a 649 had 90 plus at the wheels. John Bolster tested 494D after the RAC, and recorded 100pmh flat out and 0-60 in 9 seconds on a wet road with a 4.26 diff, impressive after a 2000 mile plus rally.LMM76C wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 10:49 pmLooks like SS1, Bramshill later in stage, from the dirt on the side.
