New Forum Section, comments please

Post by mk1coopers »

There has been a suggestion that we could have a new section on the Forum for posting up pictures or articles of period tuned cars from the likes of Broadspeed / Downton / Janspeed / Trickett ect along with tributes to the designers / builders / drivers of these cars, it could also be a section for posts when these people are no longer with us to keep their memory alive on the Forum.

The 'off topic' section is not posted in very much at the moment, this could be replaced so the Forum doesn't ge too diluted with lots of sub sections.

Your thoughts and comments please along with some ideas of what you would like he section to be called if it has enough support

Many thanks to JCT ONE for the idea

:)

I too would be interested to hear what people think.

I really don't like the "Off Topic" section and feel that most posts made there could be made to the general section. This would give us the opportunity to use the "spare slot" for something more useful. I don't want to keep adding categories though as it makes the whole MK1 Forum too difficult to navigate & keep track of.

These changes won't be made without some input from the members, so we look forward to hearing your views on this and any other way that you the members feel the forum can be improved.

Sounds great. 'Useless Bull on the Huw Green' seemed to have the off topic reserved for giving his views when he ran out of space elsewhere so would be good use of the forum.....

Heres my view, for what it's worth.

The new section for tuning companys would be ok, but most of the information is probably on Marks main site ? ( its not what I am in to though  ) Thats me banned !

As for space saving, could the new 'want to join' section not be joined up with the 'tips and tricks' that would cut out one heading.

The 'off topic' section could go it's not one I look at much.

How about splitting the Technical Talk section up into two areas such as :

Engine & Mechanical
&
Interior and Bodywork

Just my thoughts :)

I can see why this has been suggested as most period stuff ends up in Historic Motorsport which really is all about what's going on today, races, rallies etc. I think a nostalgia or archive section would work as it would put all the period stuff together ? I like the idea of people scanning old articles, adverts and pics aswell because period car magazines are sooooo bloody expensive to buy (on Ebay they are absolutely ridiculous !!) (£1 a throw at car shows though) and some are very hard to find. Might be a good way of encouraging folk to contribute stuff that could find it's way on the main Mk1 site aswell ?

I'd be very interested in a sub forum for tuning company info / pics. As others have said, I don't really go into the Off Topic section much either.

Hi all,

There has been a little misunderstanding about my suggestion.

The section I wrote to MKICoopers about, was a section where people could post threads, about the Mini people who sadly has left us (not just the tuning guys) but those, to who the Mini was soo much more, than just transportation.

As it is now, these threads get spread around the forum, and posted inbetween other threads/subjects.

here is my original PM to MKICoopers

"Hi Mark,

Reading your nice but also sad story, got me thinking, why dont we make a new section, where we tribute all the nice Mini people we loose/have lost = Ralph Broad - Chas Harris -Geoff Thomas - John Kelly - Dave Gilbert - Steve Smith - your cars builder/first owner/etc, so the threads dont get posted all over the place, and people cant find them, a sort of shrine to people, where the Mini meant something, and was not just everyday transportation.

end of qout.

It was the loss of my Mother before christmas that put the idea in my head.

She was the finest ambassador for the Mini, that BMC/BL/Rover ever could have.

She drove Mini,s all though her life, right up to the end, and attended IMM 2007 even thou she suffered from the clot, she had a few weeks before.

@ JCT ONE, yes I should have added that the section could include posts on our own friends and family if they had a strong Mini connection (i didn't explain the 'tributes to' part well enough my apologies)

I think the first decision has been made. Unless I hear a REALLY good case for keeping the "Off Topic" section it will be deleted in the next few days.

I have moved "How to do it" into the technical section where I feel it fits better. I have also moved the Welcome & Introduction category so it is now a subheading of of general chat.

I am still interested in opinions regarding other changes.

One thing is for certain though, I am not at all in favour of the MK1 forum developing in the same way as the MCR forum with so many sections it is impossible for a single human to cover all bases. I am also not in favour of a section for hosting articles, photos etc. Some folks may remember that we used to have a section for photos of MK1's, 2's etc. this was never popular & had very limited content so was subsequently deleted. I think this type of thing is covered better in the main MK1 site, repeating similar content here is simply taking up space & placing stuff on a much more fragile platform than the MK1 Main site will ever be.

I do however ALWAYS appreciate submissions & suggestions for the main MK1 site which has been a bit slow for a while now mainly due to my personal inability to afford interesting new stuff to put on it. I can't help but notice that as prices rise people seem to be far more reticent about even sharing images of the stuff they have acquired. This is a very sad development!

Please keep your suggestions coming, we do listen to them & try to make the MK1 forum an interesting place for you to visit. But without your input it is almost impossible to get it right.
