HSCC launches Historic Modsports and Saloons

As the title says, the HSCC are starting a new race series for production sports and saloon cars built before 1980.


The first races are to be held during the Wolds Trophy event at Cadwell Park on the 4th and 5th of June. A further race is scheduled for Oulton Park on August 5th.

The concept behind Historic Modsports and Saloons is to re-create a period of national racing history from the late 1960s and 1970s. Eligible cars will be those that comply with period MSA ‘Blue Book’ regulations and the series will be for cars as raced in period with original material bodies, engines from the original manufacturer and with a maximum of two valves per cylinder.
Our ambition is a grid full of Minis, MG Midgets, Ford Anglias, Datsun 240Zs, Ford Escorts, Hillman Imps and low-volume sports cars like Ginetta G15s and Clan Crusaders, all with permitted period modifications

"In order to keep the series in line with the cars of the period, there will be no forced induction engines, no later four-valve engines, BDA or BDG-type engines, no motorcycle engines, no sequential gearboxes, no Lotus/Caterham Seven type cars and no kit car replicas"

To be fair, suppose its a balance between competing costs and spectator interest. This is probably Escort BDAs not a Mini BDA as well... :lol:

EDIT : Would hope that an 8 port would be allowed

Hi, the series is for modified cars rather than specials, so its for mini's that are still mini's, but modified. No ally heads and you can't reverse the flow on the head so 8 ports would not be not allowed. It should be a great place to race a genuine modified historic mini, before the rules went bonkers. Happy to help anyone who is interested.

From reading that I would say iron 7-port and 8-port heads are OK as they were a period mod. They also allow for aftermarket heads as long as they are iron.

Please correct me if this is’nt correct, but didn’t an 8 port head convert a non-crossflow head into a crossflow head? If it did then they can’t be used, if it doesn’t then an iron 8 port head would be ok.

Pete, to answer the question, the regs are based on the 1970’s blue book regs which basically want original engine type, you can use any block from the same family, so ‘A’ series, original gearbox case, but internals of both engine and box are free. Unitary construction must remain standard between wheel hub centres, you can modify bulkheads, bonnet, boot, doors etc., can all be fibreglass, but not carbon fibre. Wheel widths are free, wide arches permitted. The regs are typical of how cars were ‘modified’ during the late 60’s and 70’s. This is not SpecialSaloons, which allow any engine, change in wheelbase, total space frames etc..
There is already a lot of interest and two good classes for minis in the 1150 and 1500 classes when you think of the cars you would be up against, imps, Anglia with pre-crossflow engines, not crossflow. Hope this helps. The HSCC have committed to a three year programme to establish the series.

Would you use the Homolagation papers to confirm what is allowed ?

Anything homologated I would have thought would be ok for eligibility. Are there any specifics you are thinking of?

If used in period then it would be OK according to the regulations
A period reverse flow (non cross-flow) cylinder head must not be replaced with a cross-flow cylinder
head, unless there is evidence that this was actually replaced in period on this car.

Following discussions with the scrutineers this weekend, I can confirm the 8 port cast iron head is eligible for the mini, as per the homologation form, although we are allowing valve sizes to be free to comply with the rest of the regulations. This doesn’t mean the head can be used on any other make of car using the mini engine, unless that particular ‘manufacturer’ also homologated it. So it’s for the mini only and also, aluminium versions of the head will not be eligible.

As racing in the BSCC fell under Gp5 rules ‘66-69 homologation on heads and induction wasn't necessary as they were free so long as they all fitted under a standard Mini bonnet and so Arden heads should be allowed?

Pete, that’s a separate category, this is modified, original material is required. No ally heads unless OEM.

Hi all,

Thought I would let you now that following the pilot events and a number of discussions, the regs from the 1979 Technical Manual have been adopted for Special Saloons rather than Modified Saloons. This brings spaceframed cars, engine changes etc., into play. Please find attached draft regulations for 2023 from the HSCC website..
