Re: LUCKY - 1961 Austin Se7en Countryman build
You will almost certainly be thinking what has/has not happened. Yes, there has been a hiatus. The rest of life, the other Mini, and a few bumps along the way.
For 5 years, I Chaired the Facilities Committee of our local Museum Society as we addressed the possible construction of an Underpass on our one Main Street at the crossing of the Canadian Pacific Railway/CPR now (after a major merger) the Canadian Pacific Kansas Southern/CPKS. The Society owned land in the vicinity, some of which would be needed for construction, another strip needed for Statutory Right-of-Way for utilities and the move of 3 Heritage Buildings. That project went on hold last year.
However, the possible exposure of our large stationary engine collection led to us initiating a preservation program for them and an assessment of our motorized vehicles including a 1952 TEA 20 Ferguson Tractor built in Coventry by the Standard Motor Co using its 2.1 litre 4 cyl engine, 2 nearly 100 year old McCormick-Deering 15-30 tractors (much bigger than the Fergie, with 6.3 litre engines). With the Underpass on hold, we looked to expand the Museum's public exposure and prepared 2 tractors for Parade/remote display purposes. And, we have a 1948 REO truck with the Gold Comet 6 cyl engine - the most powerful truck gasoline engine before V8s - which needs work.
Then there was the other Mini, the 1973 Leyland Australia Mini Window Van that I bought in 2010, drove around Australia in 2011, including Tasmania on a separate trip in 2013. After I shipped it home, ROO the Aussie Window Van became our travel Mini in North America. Apart from Meets, I campaigned it in the ALCAN 5000 Summer Rallies in 2018 and 2022 - +5,000 miles over 10 days, stages every day. Broke in 2018, finished 2nd in Class in 2022.
Home now just a week from Mini Meet East Meets West 2024 (continental meets held every 5 years) in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We had Minis & MINIs from Canadian provinces west of the Atlantic maritime group and 26 US States.
SO, back to work on LUCKY the 1961 Austin Seven Countryman. Finished the upholstery of the Front seats with all new materials from Newton before 2024 travels.
Unfortunately, stymied on the Rear Seat bottom. Found 5/16" Baltic Birch plywood, a match for the 2 old rear seats I disassembled. BUT they were not like the seats described in Newton's online instructions.
Asking for HELP from anyone who has reupholstered the rear seats on an external tank Countryman, with the steel U-channel on which the bottom pivots. The NEW foam from Newton seems to require far too much compression to be viable in the application.
