Mk1 Mini moustache grille surround in stainless?

Post by mab01uk »

Was the original Mk1 Mini moustache grille surround ever available from BMC/BL in stainless steel? My brother has recently bought a box of assorted early Mini bits and amongst it he says there is what appears to be a NOS stainless steel moustache in original BMC wrapping paper and looks like it has been wrapped a long time ago.....

The early Innocenti Minis had a stainless MK1 surround.

It looks a slightly different shape to the two Innocenti ones I've got. I'll take a photo tonight.

the early ones were stainless with a slightly different profile to the ones we know and see now

rumour has it some very early 59 cars were chrome on brass in the early shape ,but majority of early cars seemed to be stainless.
the chrome moustache was phased in autumn 61 around the same time morris "lost" its white grille, and the other "facelift changes"but of course these logged dates were only approximate.morris seemed in practice to keep the stainless moustache a small while longer, probably cos they built less than austin....

the stainless ones sat slightly lower down the front panel and had a different shaped beak at the top.

stainless moustaches usually came with stainless "trim ends" but some were oddballed, especially on change point times where chrome moustaches were fitted with stainless ends and vica versa
for my sins,i own a 1957 wolsleley 1500
