i,ve just replaced a rear wheel bearing from a ball type to a taper roller and when i tighten the nut the hub locks.
i thought the two bearing types were interchangable?

they are, there are a load of cheap bearings floating around that dont have enough space between the two bearings

i,ve just tried a hub from a later car a friend has lent me and it,s just the same.

i,ve done the nut up to 40lb/ft and it seems ok. will that be ok for a few days untill i find out what the problem is?
it,s a non genuine bearing from a well known supplier.

Should only tighten to get rid of play don't over tighten .

You haven't put the oil seal on the wrong way have you?
They shoul be fitted 'backwards' if you get what I mean!

i stand to be corrected, but i thought all taper bearings didnt have a torque setting, you just tighten up to take play out and loosen i flat? ian.

Although that's certainly true for some cars, I seem to remember my old Hillman Avenger was like that. it's not the case with Mini's. Both front and rear hubs need to be torqued up correctly.

I had this very same problem the other day.... I have just tightened it by hand until there is no side to side movement and it is fine... it was the same on my scirocco... a few people i talked to say that it shouldnt be torqued to the book...

The brg's are supposed to have a distance piece in between the two roller races.
