Water pumps
Hi all,
I have pulled the engine out today and discovered the newly installed water pump earlier this year is leaking, quite badly.
Looking at either the mini spares or MED units, apart from the cost what is the actual difference, if any between these items?

If I was you Colonel, I'd be looking at a rebuilt original cast unit. I put one, rebuilt by a member here ages ago and it's given perfect service ever since. All original but with new bearings and seals.

The both took like the same pump to me.
Swiftune version appears to be an MS pump with £15 markup on it.
I've been using the MS EVo pumps since they were introduced and have yet to replace one or had any other issues with them.
I always check the impeller is pressed fully into position and also that all the internal flashings from the casting have been removed.
Have had lesser quality pumps with impellors either catching or too far away from pump body and also had flashing left inside pump body completely blocking inlet from bottom hose.

Yes definitely check, I had an Evo one cause me all kinds of issues and head scratching. When I finally removed it, the casting was still there - with the result that no water flowed at all. I had the same problem with my genuine Ford RS500 one, but was able to drill that out in the engine bay with the rad removed. Same here. Just give them a check over, like you should do with everything nowdays. Never had any issues.

Another vote for the MS Evo pump from me, works well, and has not leaked since fitting. As others have said, definitely inspect carefully before fitting

It's easy Peter.
Remove from engine, put it in a box and send up to Paul King (not he of the 80's band King) at E P Services.
Once returned, usually within three days, paint and re-fit

As should be the case with all fixings, make sure you torque the EVO pumps correctly and don't go full-gorilla and do them up FT.
The rounded profile sealing face can pinch-cut through a gasket if it's done up too tight.

There a re few companies in the US that supply these parts. I bought some from a Massy Ferguson parts supplier. Old Massey tractors used the same water pumps. Sorry I don't have the links now.

Anybody know what the correct clearance of the
impellers should be? The new pump I got from MS
seems to be quite wide at about .024 thou and the
cast iron pump I have is at about .010 clearance or
does it really made a difference other than at low rpm?

In the process of fitting a new Minispares EVO pump and want to check the impeller clearance, casting flashings, etc.
Should the impeller clearance be 10 thou as per the original cast iron pumps? It definitely looks more than this.
