970 8-port

Was this ever homologated in Gp2form? We all know that they raced these even in international events, but were they ever "legal"?

No, it was never homologated as there was no need.... In the latter part of the 60's the European championship was run according to Group 5 regulations, which stated that head in induction was completely free.... so no need for a homologation. (We should be thankful for this I guess 'cause the ability to use special "one-off" heads was the pretty much the reason the crossflow heads was developed... (i.e in small production numbers)

By the time the ETCC went back to Gr.2, the 970 was out of production and also BMC had pulled out of motorsport...

No, only the homologation sheet of the 1275 shows the Weslake and the Arden 8 port head. But this was just up to Gr. 2. There were Gr. 5 and more free regulations for some competitions.

Best.

Besides you wouldnt be able to fit the Webers under the bonnet... leaving you with Amals or injection only..

Having said that... wonder if any one tried to run these heads with Fish carbs?? :)

Hi,

both heads fits under the round standart bonnet. Not easy but you can make them fit.

might fit, but it wont do much for performance, those webers must cry petrol tears having such a small gap from the bonnet to the ram pipes & innards!
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

There is power. Within the regulations.

That hardly looks optimal.

How does the power vs. cost compare to a optimal 5-port head?

And what about airfilters.... ?? Nice IRB-kit you got there! (=Instant Re-Bore! :))

Hi,

the difference is not so much the power but the torque. If you do for example hillclimb on the continent, the torque will spare a lot of seconds and if you do hillclimb, a small grid is enough to save the engine. But you are right. On a flat circuit, there is not so much advantage with an 8-port like this.

Cheers.

So what would the difference be with four amals which fit under the STD bonnet no problem, has any one any experience?

The Amal's are 8mm smaller and more difficult to handle. They are too small to work together with a 1400. About the power Nick Swift will know more.
