The BMC Min-van that Daryl Mitchell drove from Torquay to Noosa in 1967-1968, sitting on the roof is Daryl's mate Bobby Lees.
Whoops!

Same thing happened to a large glass fronted shop in Thatcham Broadway. Willi Hubner (ex German POW who stayed on after WW2) reversed in to make a 3 point turn and.........

Re: Just a nice period picture
OK not a Mini but this vehicle would appear to be a witness to some early Mini history - Jaguar Mk1 3.4 litre registration LM 457 on the pier approach Bournemouth in the late 1950's. Pleasant enough colour slide in my possession, but it would appear that at some stage after this unassuming transparency was captured the car was entered by John Ashworth and Leon Markson into the 1960 Monte Carlo Rallye as entrant No 229, Category 1 standard touring class 4 2000cc. The event was the first for the BMC Minis of course and ran between 19-23 January 1960.
The Jag didn't last the distance and retired from the contest but apart from the nightime image of the rally attached here it also appears to be the vehicle in-between all the shots of Minis at 6.22 minutes in this Pathe film of the event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCdkyFK93sM
Just for some more piffle, LM 457 is a London registration dating from 1914-15. It was still on a modern Jaguar in 2014 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHjPCgxJIOg), and is now on a BMW... Owner unknown.

And a Hillman Super Minx estate centre frame. My father had one, lovely car but it rusted away after a few years . . .

Re: Just a nice period picture
Please please do not EVER refer to a rally as a race. It is something that seems to be making a wider return again lately and it still has insurance and other implications for the future of the sport and must be avoided.

Taken in May 1972. Staff car park for the (then) recently opened Leyland Bus Factory Workington, Cumbria.

Re: Just a nice period picture
Judging by the registration 590MAO that’s a really early one (1962). Interesting that it’s owner felt it needed to be parked away from the others.
The ADO16 is definitely the most popular choice in the car park. That may reflect the fact that it was Britain’s best seller but there may also have been some Leyland employee discount helping it along.
There’s also a brand new 1972 (EAO190K) model in the car park.

Re: Just a nice period picture
It sounds a bit Brexitty but it's nice to see all (?) British cars there.
This photo is around 1973 and the 1100 is 10 years old - the life of a car back then.
I wonder if that's the engine from it behind on the ground?

I spy with my little eye two VWs, one Bug and one Fastback, and a Peugeot 404 Estate. I'd say at least 50% of the vehicles are BMC/BL.Costafortune wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 7:21 pm It sounds a bit Brexitty but it's nice to see all (?) British cars there.
