Autocross 1966 Film

An excellent film of teh 1966 Player No.6 Autocross Championship. Plenty of Mini action and old number plates to spot. One in particular springs to mind, but how many of teh others are still out there?

NTU 666D rings a bell, pretty sure Steve Enty will remind me who’s S that was. That Ogle (7617 RW) was well known and I’m sure carried the identity of a scrapped racing Mini Cooper that rolled into a ball at Oulton which I have a photo of.

Was it 1967 or 1968 that the wet No 6 final was held near High Wycombe. I think it was opposite where the "Hearing Dogs for the Blind" are now based. Great battle between Barry Lee and Roger Clark with victory going to Roger. His skill in the conditions on a very wet sloping site was an eye opener.

This should be mandatory after the concours at Beaulieu, three laps of the next field to remind everyone what these cars were meant for.

Barry Lee was a very serious rally driver - you can YouTube the 1971 Circuit of Ireland when in an Escort he's consistently up in the top three. Paddy in a standard RS1600 is doing the camera and commentary and absolutely flying.
Will Sparrow makes a very good stab at it as well.

Not only a serious rally driver but that was later, Motorcycle Speedway, Autocross, Rallycross, Rally, Ovals, Racing, Truck Racing. In fact if it had wheels he tamed it and WON.

I think he has 1500 race victories in total, doubtful that will ever be beaten.

Indeed. Happy memories of days popping into Coventry Service Station to see what he was up to and also Burtons. Great memories of attending many Autocross events watching him in his yellow Anglia. Not to mention the Wells Fargo (of Woodford) brown Minis competing with other local West Essex Minis.

I remember my 1st Autocross meeting, pre 1966 as I had gone fishing with a friend (on our bikes) and on the other side of the river there was so much dust. I think it was a West Essex Car Club meetiing (John White?) Those were the days. Forget HERO "Arrive & Drive" - that's what the comeptitors did in 1965. What was a trailer? Anyone remember the brown Wells Fargo (Wells of Woodford - Minis?)
