My gearbox needs a dentist

Post by Vegard »

I've just stripped my SC gearbox, literally, and found this:

The car drove perfectly well, this is from the last outing:

Obviously, there's something wrong with third gear here. I'm wondering if this happened while opening the two big nuts while dismantling. Could it be? The third gear has also got a mark on one tooth.

verg

thats your own fault

boxes should always be locked in 1st and 4th when your undoing or doing the large nuts up.

locking them in 1st and 3rd often breaks teeth off due to the loading on the gears.

silly boy :x

I've done that and took a couple of teeth off, when you thinks of how much power and strain you put on a gearbox when driving it hard its difficult to imagine that doing a nut up would strip teeth, thanks for that info Guru I had'nt appreciated there would be a difference with which gear was locked, learn something new every day.

Did you loosen the pinion and input gear with a air assisted tool?
Always use normal force, never airtools on a gearbox,is my opinion.
Used to work for tools departemnt of Atlas Copco;very expensive airtools !Often used in car factories because of it's reliable use .

 ;)
No No No!
No impact gun, air tools on gear box or engine parts, unless you are workin gin a scrape yard!
We have learnt too much expensive lessons!
And Mini parts are so fragile - I mean tiny in dimensions!

Nope, no air tools. Just a 20" lever, big viking muscles and loc-tite on the nuts.
