annoying knocking from rear on dry suspension model mk1

Post by 814CWE »

boo !

annoying knock on my late 62 super deluxe saloon

set off from start you get a loud knock from rear
wont do it again till you stop, brake then go into reverse
then knock !

set off forward then knock.!

when driving normally it dont do it

just on initial set off or when on initial reverse

wonder if its subframe mounting bushes or summat ,or a shocker bush?

its gettin on my wick :|

check the radius arm hasn't worked loose.
The radius arm pin may have worn the subframe inner hole oval.
That might give a clunk at each change of direction ?

yes.
It could maybe be loose enough to move with the load of the car on it but still tight enough to be missed on a MOT test. The only way to be sure is to check it's tight.

Apart from the two causes already meant (radius arm shaft and shocks), a third common cause is the exhaust hitting the shell when accelerating/decelerating.

Guessing & Thinking Dept. does NOT solve your problem. From what I can read something is loose or broken. The first check is a bit boaring but try to get to a garage and borrow a lift. Bring tools that cover every size of nuts and bolts of the rear. Tighten every single one of them and do not forget any of them. As we do not know the general condition of your Mini there are a few dodgy things that could be checked a bit extra.
Radious arms: See to when you have loosened both nuts and tried to move the wheel in and out that the flex does not exceed 4-5mm. Rethighten and chck again. Also check the four bolts that holds the camber/toe plate. They are often neglected or forgotten at service. Don´t forget to reset the camber/toe.
Breaks: Take of the wheel and check the fitting of the plate. All 3 bults. Tighten if needed. Also ( as said ) check the break linings if anytrhing might be brooken. Start with this.
Shocks: Check the top/bottom nuts.
Good Luck

gone over everything with a tooth comb..
the shockers are late oct 1962 vintage and they werent done on the cars resto in 1980s

seems to me either these or rock hard-old subframe mount bushes.nothing is loose ,theres not a glitch of play.
my other grey car knocked on bounce which was shocks,
i shall go over every nut and bolt again,,loosen em all,,then renip em up ,

if its not shocks ive not lost anything cos they old anyway, and spoil the look of the car and obviously at that age and 55000 miles they will be well past thier best
