'Lincoln' LSD?
Hi,
Have just bought race engine and gearbox to further reduce the excuses for not going fast enough next year and it was described as having a 'Lincoln' LSD but the seller didn't have any more details, haven't yet had the chance to have a look inside but was wondering whether anyone could proivde any more info and save me the trouble?
thanks
Ken

lincolns where made by mbe in lincoln (funnily enough), they are a modded std diff with a big spring in them, they where sold to autograssers and the like i think
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

Hi Guru- thanks knew someone would know,
guess it's a bit like this 'phantom' diff kit you can get from across the pond and obviously will have it's limitations. The seller, who has been racing various minis for a good few years described it as a relatively 'gentle' acting diff that you didn't need to have been working out to keep it straight. Not sure what all this will mean in practice, guess I've just got to get it in the car and give it a try.
thanks again

Hi! That probably means that it does not limit much slip!kenb wrote:Hi Guru- thanks knew someone would know,

Hi
A lot of guys over here have run this type of diff for may years in Historic Motorsport.
Just so long as you are not running it with big slicks you shouldn't have a problem.
Thanks
Ian

Re: 'Lincoln' LSD?
About a dozen or so years ago I got one. I had always been told a Mini fitted with an LSD would be hard to drive, but with it set to 80lbft it was great. Note, like someone says, they use large belleville washers, there aren't any ramps in it, so it's preloaded all the time. Standard type CWP too, but one drawback is, although mine didn't fail, is that your large bronze bush in the centre is machined away a fair bit. Tthe preload drops off as the fibre washers wear.
I used 10 inch wheels and Dunlop D93s, and I think a 13" dia steering wheel, no wrestling required
First stage event I used it on, well the scales fell from my eyes as soon as I got to a gravel lane, was able to keep the toe in it and steer with the rear LOL

Re: 'Lincoln' LSD?
Thanks folks for the info, would welcome more if anyone has anything to add
but sounds like should be fine for running in historics, which is what I'm doing, although as our control tyres are yokohama 48s (and 32s for 10 inchers) and I'm currently running 175/50 13s (although considering 12s) so would be worth giving it a good check over
