The size of your nuts (brakes front subframe ones that is)

Hi all,

I know the drivers side one has to be shallow but some cars had a passenger side brake pipe one that was quite deeper I believe????

I think this was because it made it easier to remove as it sat above the subframe lip and a spanner can get to it through the wing????

Or was this just a mod we did back in the day I wonder? Anyway, Somerford do them and this is how they look with the test pipework (spire washer yet to be fitted). I do have the shallower nut as well (same one as on clutch pipe), so what are you all using and... am I missing something if I retain this larger one???

Should be deeper on the LH under the radiator. Not sure why really.

Yes Andy Pen, I can see EXACTLY where you're coming from. The LONGER LENGTH of your nut allows it to protrude higher and thus will allow you greater access to it later, without the need to remove the radiator. This is the same idea of mine a few years ago to use a longer headed bolt (or a bolt with a spacer nut behind the head) on the rearmost clutch slave cylinder retaining bolt. The nut head, being higher allows greater access to it.

As Andy1967 says, the nut looks to be upside down. A star washer will raise it a bit more too. longer nuts never did me no harm though

Thanks folks - the nut is the same both sides, whereas the originals had a flat bottom - oooeeer I hear you say

At the moment I can only see advantages - as long as it doesn’t foul the pipe fitting it seems plus all round?

Pretty sure mine had taller nut radiator side and thinner on clutch side

Surely how high the brake pipe union sits depends on the how long the thread is on the flexi pipe it fits too?.

What ever size nut you fit doesnt make the flexi pipe thread any longer.

There’s plenty of length there it seems, the one in the pic is only loosely fitted.

Something else spotted - the new brake switch union is straight - not 90 degrees like imacs. Back to my bucket of bits to find the original then!!
